Chapter 18 - The Account in Evelyn’s Name

Singapore account seventy-three contained ninety-four million dollars.

Registered under an offshore trust.

Beneficial owner.

Evelyn Hartwell Grant.

She had never seen it.

Never authorized it.

Never known it existed.

But Nathan had.

Richard had.

Her father had.

Evelyn returned to New York immediately.

Federal investigators traced the deposits.

Some came from Grant Meridian.

Some from Northstar.

Some from entities connected to Hartwell insiders.

It looked like Evelyn had been collecting bribes for years.

The perfect final frame.

If Nathan fell, Evelyn would fall harder.

Daniel studied the structure.

“This is why he forged your signatures.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He was building the ending.”

Nathan’s plan became clear.

Drain money.

Shift assets.

Remove Evelyn for instability.

Then reveal the offshore account.

Hartwell would believe she had been corrupt all along.

Nathan would emerge as the betrayed husband who discovered everything.

He would inherit influence through sympathy and board alliances.

Evelyn almost laughed.

It was monstrous.

It was also elegant.

That evening, Nathan’s attorneys requested a settlement.

He would cooperate.

Return assets.

Resign from Grant Meridian.

In exchange, Evelyn would publicly acknowledge that several transactions had been jointly authorized.

Daniel threw the proposal aside.

“No.”

Evelyn kept reading.

One clause concerned the marriage.

No admission of infidelity.

No admission of surveillance.

No disclosure of Clara.

Nathan still cared about reputation.

Even with prison approaching.

Evelyn smiled.

That was useful.

She agreed to meet him one final time.

Nathan arrived looking exhausted.

“You found the account.”

“Yes.”

He studied her.

“You finally understand.”

“I understand you created an account in my name to frame me.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I created insurance.”

“Against me?”

“Against your family.”

Evelyn leaned back.

“You still think that distinction matters.”

Nathan’s eyes hardened.

“Your father used both of us.”

“You chose what you became.”

“So did he.”

“And so did you.”

Nathan stared at her.

For the first time, there was no charm left.

Only resentment.

“You were born with everything.”

Evelyn waited.

“I built myself.”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You built your reputation using my capital, my family connections, my committee votes, my silence, and eventually my forged name.”

Nathan flinched.

That one landed.

“You could have stood beside me.”

“I did.”

“No.”

His voice rose.

“You stood above me.”

Evelyn finally understood the marriage.

Nathan had never forgiven her for possessing power he could not claim as self-made.

He had loved her.

Perhaps.

But resentment had eaten the love.

Evelyn stood.

“We are done.”

Nathan laughed.

“You cannot prove the Singapore account is not yours.”

Evelyn looked down at him.

“No.”

Nathan smiled.

Then Evelyn added.

“But you can.”

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

She placed a phone on the table.

Clara’s voice played.

A recorded conversation.

Nathan instructing her to route documents through Singapore.

Then Richard’s voice.

Then Jonathan’s.

Nathan stared.

Evelyn continued.

“They all gave statements.”

His face went white.

She leaned closer.

“You taught everyone to underestimate your wife.”

A pause.

“You forgot you were also teaching them to underestimate how quickly they would betray you.”

The door opened.

Federal agents entered.

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

“Evelyn.”

May you like

She did not answer.

The cuffs closed around his wrists.
