Chapter 16 - The Father Who Disappeared

Evelyn traveled to Geneva under federal protection.
Daniel remained in New York managing Hartwell’s emergency litigation.
Clara entered witness protection temporarily after receiving anonymous threats.
Nathan was ordered to surrender his passport.
Jonathan disappeared.
That frightened Evelyn more than anything else.
The clinic in Geneva specialized in neurological recovery.
Private patients.
Private records.
Private entrances.
Evelyn met the physician in charge.
Dr. Emil Fischer looked uncomfortable.
“Your father was here.”
Evelyn felt her knees weaken.
“When?”
“Until four months ago.”
“Why did nobody contact me?”
“He forbade it.”
Anger rose beside relief.
“He was my father.”
“He believed communication would expose you.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Again.
Protection through secrecy.
The family disease.
“What happened to him?”
“He suffered a stroke during the original investigation.”
“So he was not dead.”
“No.”
“Why fake his death?”
Dr. Fischer looked toward the federal agents.
“Because someone attempted to poison him.”
Evelyn stared.
The doctor continued.
“Small doses over time.”
Her stomach turned.
“Who?”
“We do not know.”
“Where is he now?”
The doctor hesitated.
“He left.”
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
“With whom?”
Dr. Fischer looked at her.
“Your cousin Jonathan.”
Evelyn felt rage explode.
Jonathan had known her father was alive.
He had stood in her security office and said nothing.
She immediately called him.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
You were not supposed to find Geneva yet.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Another message.
Nathan knows where your father is.
Then.
And if Nathan is arrested before we find him, your father dies.
Federal agents took the phone.
Tracing began.
Evelyn demanded answers.
The next twelve hours revealed something worse.
Jonathan had not abducted her father.
He had helped move him.
Her father had left the clinic voluntarily.
Why?
Because he believed the conspiracy extended into federal law enforcement itself.
The investigation was no longer about Nathan’s fraud.
It was about a network built around Hartwell’s capital.
Nathan had used that network.
Maybe served it.
Maybe tried to steal from it.
Evelyn returned to New York.
She requested to see Nathan.
Against Daniel’s advice.
They met inside a secure interview room.
Nathan walked in wearing a dark suit.
No tie.
No wedding ring.
He sat across from her.
“You look tired.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
“Where is my father?”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“So you found Geneva.”
“Where is he?”
Nathan leaned back.
“I do not know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I expect you to believe something worse.”
Evelyn waited.
Nathan’s smile disappeared.
“Your father came to me first.”
The words hit hard.
“About what?”
“You.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“He believed Hartwell would destroy you.”
Evelyn stared.
“He asked me to help dismantle the trust before it consumed your life.”
“That is a lie.”
“Maybe.”
Nathan’s eyes remained steady.
“But ask yourself one question.”
He leaned closer.
“If your father believed I was the enemy, why did he leave me the key?”
Evelyn froze.
Nathan whispered.
“You thought I was breaking into Hartwell.”
May you like
He smiled without warmth.
“Evelyn, your father invited me in.”
