Chapter 15 - The Dead Man’s Video

Evelyn could not speak.

Her father sat in a plain room.

Pale.

Thin.

Alive.

The date stamp showed three days after Hartwell Hospital reported his death.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“This could be manipulated.”

Evelyn watched her father’s hands.

He wore his wedding ring.

The scratch across the band was exactly where she remembered it.

Her father looked into the camera.

“If Evelyn is seeing this, Nathan has gone too far.”

Her chest tightened.

He coughed.

Then continued.

“My death will be reported before it occurs.”

Evelyn gripped the table.

Daniel immediately paused the video.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Play it.”

He did.

Her father continued.

“It is necessary because someone inside Hartwell is monitoring my medical records and movements.”

Evelyn felt tears in her eyes for the first time.

“I agreed to disappear briefly while federal investigators examined the trust.”

Daniel looked stunned.

Federal investigators.

Her father had known.

The video continued.

“I intended to return.”

Evelyn whispered.

“But you did not.”

Her father looked exhausted.

“If I fail to return, Evelyn must assume the investigation was compromised.”

The screen glitched.

Then resumed.

He named no one.

But he described hidden accounts.

Internal bribery.

A plan to shift Hartwell assets through Grant Meridian.

Nathan was only one part of it.

Then came the sentence Evelyn feared.

“Jonathan knows more than he admits.”

She closed her eyes.

Of course.

Her father continued.

“Richard knows enough to be dangerous.”

Daniel swallowed.

“And Daniel knows enough to become a target.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Her father had not accused him.

He had warned him.

The recording continued.

“If Evelyn discovers this after Nathan moves publicly against her, tell her I am sorry.”

Evelyn’s tears finally fell.

“I taught her strength through silence.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“But silence becomes dangerous when bad men learn to depend on it.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn wiped her face.

“Where did my father actually die?”

Daniel immediately began making calls.

Hospital records showed his body had been identified privately.

Closed casket.

Rapid cremation.

Evelyn had accepted it because her father’s illness had been severe.

Now every detail looked wrong.

Federal investigators arrived that evening.

They examined the video.

One agent finally confirmed something.

Hartwell’s founder had indeed been cooperating with a confidential financial investigation before his death.

But the operation had been terminated suddenly.

“Why?”

Evelyn asked.

The agent hesitated.

“Because your father disappeared.”

She stared.

“You mean died.”

The agent looked at her.

“No, Mrs. Grant.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“We never confirmed his death.”

The room went silent.

Then the agent placed a photograph on the table.

It had been taken in Geneva six months earlier.

An elderly man was entering a private clinic.

The photograph was grainy.

But Evelyn knew the posture.

The shoulders.

The way he held his cane.

May you like

Her father.

Alive six months ago.
