Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Doors

The four security officers stopped in the center of the maternity hallway.

None of them looked at Emily first.

They looked at Preston.

That alone made his expression change.

“Why are they here?”

Preston released Vanessa’s waist and stepped forward.

“I’m asking you a question.”

The officers did not answer.

The secured doors opened again.

Raymond Saint Claire walked through them.

He was sixty-two years old, broad-shouldered, silver-haired, and dressed in a charcoal suit with no tie.

Emily had seen him angry before.

She had never seen him this quiet.

He crossed the hallway without acknowledging Preston.

He stopped directly in front of Emily.

His eyes went immediately to the hand beneath her stomach.

“Where did she hit you?”

Emily pointed beneath her ribs.

Raymond’s jaw tightened.

“Are you bleeding?”

“No.”

“Contractions?”

“I don’t know.”

That was when Raymond finally looked toward the nurse behind the desk.

“Get Dr. Keller.”

The nurse was already moving.

Preston stepped between them.

“Raymond, this is being blown completely out of proportion.”

Raymond turned.

For the first time, his eyes settled on Preston.

“What happened?”

Preston hesitated.

Vanessa answered for him.

“She came at me.”

The elderly man near the Labor and Delivery entrance immediately stood.

“No, she didn’t.”

Vanessa froze.

His wife rose beside him.

“We saw the whole thing.”

The nurse stopped beside the desk.

“So did I.”

Preston’s face lost a little color.

Raymond looked at the nearest security officer.

“Preserve every camera angle covering this corridor from the last two hours.”

Preston laughed once.

It sounded forced.

“Preserve it?”

He shook his head.

“You’re talking like there was a crime.”

Raymond’s eyes dropped toward Emily’s stomach.

“There may have been.”

Vanessa stepped closer to Preston.

“This is ridiculous.”

Raymond ignored her.

“Escort Ms. Cross downstairs.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“This is Preston’s hospital.”

The hallway went silent.

Raymond looked almost tired.

“No.”

One word.

Nothing more.

Vanessa’s expression flickered.

Preston stepped forward.

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?”

Raymond turned toward the enormous silver letters visible through the glass lobby.

WHITMORE–SAINT CLAIRE MEDICAL CENTER.

Then he looked back at Preston.

“It means your grandfather’s name is on the building.”

He paused.

“My family owns the building.”

Preston’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.”

Raymond did not argue.

He simply reached inside his jacket and removed his phone.

He made one call.

“Arthur.”

A pause.

“Activate the emergency governance protocol.”

Preston stared at him.

Raymond continued.

“Effective immediately, suspend all discretionary authority attached to Preston Whitmore’s executive credentials pending review.”

Preston stepped forward.

“You can’t do that.”

Raymond ended the call.

“I just did.”

Behind them, the elevator opened.

Dr. Keller rushed into the hallway with two nurses and a wheelchair.

Emily started to protest.

“I can walk.”

Dr. Keller shook her head.

“Not after abdominal impact at thirty-two weeks.”

Raymond touched Emily’s shoulder.

“Go.”

Emily looked at Preston.

For the first time since the kick, he looked frightened.

Not for her.

For himself.

Emily understood that immediately.

And somehow, that hurt more than the bruise forming beneath her dress.

As the nurses wheeled her toward the secured maternity doors, Preston called after her.

“Emily.”

She did not turn.

Then he said the one thing that made her stop.

“You have no idea what you’re doing to this family.”

Emily slowly looked over her shoulder.

“No, Preston.”

Her voice stayed calm.

“I think I finally do.”

May you like

The doors closed between them.

And for the first time in eight years of marriage, Preston Whitmore could not follow her.
