Chapter 12 - The Camera Above the Elevator

Preston’s confession changed the board investigation.
But it was not the worst evidence.
That arrived two hours later.
Security director Thomas Reed entered Raymond’s office carrying a tablet.
“We recovered deleted footage.”
Raymond looked up.
“Deleted by whom?”
“An executive credential.”
Emily already knew.
“Preston.”
Thomas nodded.
The footage showed the maternity hallway twelve minutes before Emily arrived.
Preston stood beside Vanessa near the elevator.
There was no audio.
But their body language was clear.
Vanessa looked angry.
Preston pointed toward the elevator.
Then toward a ceiling camera.
He stepped close to her and said something.
She nodded.
A minute later, Preston walked toward the security desk.
He handed the supervisor a document.
The same warning report naming Emily as a potential disturbance.
Then came the important part.
Preston pointed toward the security officer positioned near Labor and Delivery.
The officer left.
Emily watched the screen.
“He moved security away.”
Thomas nodded.
“Direct instruction.”
Raymond’s face darkened.
“Why was this footage deleted?”
“Preston used his executive access at 4:07 yesterday.”
Emily looked at Sarah.
“That was after my uncle arrived.”
Sarah nodded.
“So he knew it mattered.”
Thomas tapped the screen.
“There’s more.”
The video advanced.
Emily appeared from the east corridor.
She walked slowly with one hand resting beneath her stomach.
Vanessa moved into her path.
Emily stopped.
No aggressive movement.
No raised hand.
Nothing supporting Preston’s report.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
The kick was unmistakable.
Emily watched herself bend against the railing.
She did not look away.
Preston appeared in frame.
He looked toward the nearest security camera.
Not toward Emily.
Toward the camera.
Then he moved half a step to the side.
Sarah saw it too.
“He knew exactly where the camera was.”
Thomas nodded.
“And watch this.”
Seconds after the kick, Preston moved between Vanessa and the camera angle.
He blocked the clearest view of her face.
Emily felt sick.
“He was protecting her identity.”
“Looks that way.”
Raymond stood.
“That’s enough.”
Emily stopped him.
“No.”
Raymond looked at her.
“What else do you need?”
“The finances.”
“We already have the theft.”
“We have pieces.”
Emily shook her head.
“I want the whole thing.”
Sarah understood.
“If they lose the management contract only because of the hallway incident, they’ll spend years calling it an emotional family dispute.”
Emily nodded.
“But if we prove the fraud?”
Raymond answered.
“They never control this hospital again.”
Emily looked at the frozen image of Preston standing between Vanessa and the camera.
Yesterday, she had thought his silence was cowardice.

Now she understood.
It had been participation.
