Chapter 9 - Forty-Three Million

Marcus Hall agreed to meet only with Emily, Raymond, and Sarah.
They chose a private conference room inside a law firm unrelated to either family.
Marcus arrived carrying a backpack.
He looked exhausted.
He had been Whitmore Medical Management’s assistant controller for six years.
Two months earlier, he questioned a set of consulting payments.
Three weeks later, he was fired.
“They said performance issues.”
Marcus opened his laptop.
“It wasn’t performance.”
He turned the screen toward Emily.
Rows of transactions filled the display.
Consulting fees.
Property leases.
Vendor advances.
Executive reimbursement.
Emily stared at the numbers.
“What am I looking at?”
Marcus pointed.
“Money leaving hospital operating accounts.”
“Where did it go?”
“Shell companies.”
Raymond leaned forward.
“Owned by whom?”
“Some trace to Whitmore Development.”
Marcus clicked another file.
“Some trace to companies controlled by Preston.”
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“And the rest?”
Marcus looked at her.
“That’s where it gets strange.”
A name appeared on the screen.
VC STRATEGIC ADVISORY.
Sarah frowned.
“VC?”
Marcus nodded.
“Vanessa Cross.”
Emily stared at him.
“She was being paid?”
“Over six hundred thousand dollars in eighteen months.”
“For what?”
“No legitimate service I could identify.”
Raymond’s face darkened.
Emily thought about Vanessa’s cashmere coat.
The diamond bracelet.
The private wellness consultation.
Preston had not merely been having an affair.
The hospital had been paying for it.
Marcus opened another folder.
“There’s also this.”
An email.
From Preston.
TO: CHARLES WHITMORE.
SUBJECT: E.C. CONTROL.
Emily read the message.
IF WE COMPLETE THE PROXY BEFORE Q3, RAYMOND CANNOT BLOCK THE RESTRUCTURE.
CHARLES had replied.
KEEP HER CALM UNTIL AFTER THE BABY.
Emily stopped breathing for a second.
Sarah whispered,
“They were discussing you.”
Marcus nodded.
“There are dozens like this.”
Raymond stood.
His anger was no longer hidden.
Emily looked at him.
“Sit down.”
He did.
Marcus continued.
“They needed Emily’s voting rights because the restructuring would move hospital assets into a new holding entity.”
Raymond stared at the screen.
“That would violate the trust charter.”
“They knew.”
Emily spoke softly.
“What would happen after the transfer?”
Marcus looked directly at her.
“Whitmore Development could borrow against hospital property.”
Sarah leaned back.
“They were going to mortgage the medical center.”
Marcus nodded.
Emily thought of the maternity hallway.
The nurses.
The patients.
The building her mother had helped protect.
Preston had spent years telling everyone his family owned it.
Apparently he had decided the easiest way to make the lie true was to steal enough control to make it happen.
Marcus closed one file.
“There’s one more thing.”
Emily waited.
“I found a calendar entry on Preston’s account.”
“What entry?”
Marcus turned the screen again.
Yesterday’s date appeared.
11:30 A.M.
EMILY - MATERNITY VISIT.
Below it was a second line.
VANESSA - HANDLE BEFORE RAYMOND HEARS.
Emily stared at those six words.
May you like
Yesterday had not been an accident.
And Preston had not merely failed to stop it.
