Chapter 17 - Vanessa Changes Sides

Vanessa arrived at Sarah’s office wearing jeans, sunglasses, and no makeup.

She looked nothing like the woman from the maternity hallway.

Emily sat across from her.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Vanessa finally removed her sunglasses.

A bruise-colored exhaustion surrounded her eyes.

“I’m not going to apologize and expect that to fix anything.”

Emily’s face remained still.

“Good.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“I hated you.”

Emily said nothing.

“Because Preston made you sound weak.”

Vanessa looked down.

“He said you stayed with him because you couldn’t survive alone.”

Emily almost smiled.

“He told you that?”

“He told me you didn’t understand money.”

“He said you were dependent on him.”

“He said the pregnancy trapped him.”

Emily’s fingers tightened.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me to confront you at the hospital.”

“I know.”

“He said he needed you upset in public.”

“I know that too.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

Emily leaned back.

“What I don’t know is whether he told you to kick me.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with shame.

“No.”

Emily waited.

“He told me to get in your face.”

“To say things about the affair.”

“To make you yell.”

“The kick was me.”

Emily held her gaze.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Because you didn’t react.”

The answer was so ugly that it sounded honest.

“You just stood there.”

“And I wanted you to break.”

Emily felt the baby move beneath her hand.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I thought if you broke, I won.”

Silence stretched between them.

Then Emily asked,

“What do you have?”

Vanessa pulled out a phone.

“Everything he sent me for almost a year.”

Sarah connected it to a secure laptop.

Messages filled the screen.

Preston promising Vanessa a board position.

Preston discussing Emily’s proxy.

Preston mocking Raymond.

Preston describing the hospital as an asset he would soon control.

Then Vanessa opened an audio file.

Charles’s voice filled the office.

“Once Emily’s vote is neutralized, Raymond cannot stop the restructure.”

Preston answered,

“And after Monday?”

“We close the debt.”

“Then your marriage becomes your problem.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Vanessa paused the recording.

“There’s another part.”

“Play it.”

Charles spoke again.

“And keep that woman away from Emily after this.”

Preston laughed.

“Vanessa can handle her.”

The recording continued.

“If Emily causes a scene, even better.”

Emily stared at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered,

“I didn’t know what they were really doing.”

Emily’s voice was cold.

“You knew enough.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No performance.

Just yes.

That mattered.

Not enough for forgiveness.

Enough for truth.

Sarah saved the files.

Emily stood.

Vanessa looked up.

“What happens to me?”

Emily answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

“Are you going to press charges?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa flinched.

Emily walked toward the door.

“But if you tell the truth, I won’t lie about that either.”

For the first time, Vanessa understood something Preston never had.

May you like

Emily’s calm was not weakness.

It was control.
