Chapter 6 - What Vanessa Was Promised

Vanessa Cross spent the night in a luxury hotel three blocks from the medical center.

She ordered champagne at 9:10.

At 9:24, Preston arrived.

By 9:31, they were screaming at each other.

Vanessa had expected him to protect her.

Instead, Preston walked into the suite and said,

“What the hell did you do?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You watched me.”

“I told you to confront her.”

“You told me she needed to understand.”

“I did not tell you to kick a pregnant woman in front of three cameras.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“So now this is my fault?”

Preston moved toward the window.

“You made it physical.”

“You wanted her humiliated.”

“I wanted her angry.”

Vanessa froze.

There was a difference.

A very important one.

Preston turned.

“I needed her to react.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“For what?”

Preston did not answer quickly enough.

She understood.

“The security report.”

He said nothing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You filed it before she arrived.”

Still nothing.

“You wanted her to look unstable.”

“It was insurance.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“For the divorce?”

“For everything.”

Her voice became quiet.

“You said once she was out, we could stop hiding.”

“We can.”

“You said the hospital would be yours.”

Preston looked away.

That was the second mistake he made that night.

Vanessa had spent ten months listening to Preston talk about power.

The hospital.

The board.

The family offices.

The penthouse he planned to buy after the divorce.

The foundation gala where he intended to introduce her publicly.

Now she saw fear behind every promise.

“You don’t own it, do you?”

Preston turned.

“Don’t start.”

“You don’t own the hospital.”

“The Whitmore family controls operations.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Preston grabbed his coat.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You lied to me too.”

He stopped.

“You knew I was married.”

“I knew you were married.”

She stepped toward him.

“I didn’t know your wife could destroy you.”

Preston’s face hardened.

“Emily cannot destroy me.”

“Her uncle suspended you in three minutes.”

“That’s temporary.”

Vanessa studied him.

“What happens if it isn’t?”

Preston opened the door.

“Do yourself a favor.”

“Stay quiet.”

Vanessa watched him leave.

Then she walked to the table.

Her second phone was sitting beside the champagne bucket.

She picked it up.

There were months of texts on that phone.

Promises.

Instructions.

Financial screenshots.

And one message from Preston sent two days earlier.

MAKE HER LOSE CONTROL IN PUBLIC.

May you like

Vanessa stared at it for a long time.

Then she copied everything to the cloud.
