Chapter 4 - The Story He Prepared

Preston had written the story before Emily ever entered the building.

That fact changed everything.

At 1:18 that afternoon, Sarah obtained the complete security log.

At 1:31, the hospital’s technology department recovered the original access request.

At 1:46, Raymond called an emergency meeting of the medical center’s independent compliance committee.

Preston called Emily seventeen times during the same period.

She answered none of them.

The eighteenth call came from his father.

Charles Whitmore.

Emily stared at the screen.

Raymond noticed.

“You don’t have to answer.”

Emily picked up.

“Hello, Charles.”

His voice came immediately.

“What on earth is going on?”

Emily looked toward the fetal monitor.

“You should ask your son.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“He says there was a misunderstanding.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Vanessa kicked me.”

A pause.

Then Charles lowered his voice.

“Preston says you provoked her.”

Raymond’s jaw tightened from across the room.

Emily remained calm.

“Were you calling to ask if your grandson is safe?”

Silence.

Then Charles said,

“Of course I care about the baby.”

“But?”

“This situation is larger than one ugly argument.”

Emily looked down at the forged signature in front of her.

“I know.”

Charles did not recognize the warning.

“The hospital cannot survive a public scandal.”

“Then maybe your son should have considered that before filing a false security report about his pregnant wife.”

Another pause.

“Emily, families handle these things privately.”

“You mean quietly.”

“I mean intelligently.”

Emily’s voice hardened.

“I was quiet for eight years.”

Charles exhaled.

“Do not let Raymond use your emotions to destroy what three generations built.”

Emily looked at Raymond.

He heard every word through the speaker.

“What did three generations build, Charles?”

“A medical institution respected across the state.”

“No.”

Emily picked up the ownership document.

“You built a management company inside an institution my mother’s family controlled.”

Charles went silent.

Emily continued.

“And apparently Preston forgot the difference too.”

Charles’s tone changed immediately.

“Who showed you those papers?”

“You just answered my question.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

She sat straighter.

“For the first time today, you’re going to listen.”

Charles said nothing.

“I have a bruise under my ribs.”

“My baby is being monitored for contractions.”

“Your son watched the woman he’s sleeping with kick me.”

“Then he filed a report saying I was dangerous.”

Her voice never rose.

“So if your next sentence is about protecting the Whitmore name instead of asking whether your grandson is alive, don’t say it.”

Charles was silent for five full seconds.

Then he said,

“You don’t understand what happens if Raymond terminates our agreement.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“What happens?”

Charles did not answer.

That scared her more than anger would have.

Finally, he said,

“People lose everything.”

The call ended.

Raymond looked toward Emily.

She studied him.

“What did he mean?”

May you like

Raymond’s face became unreadable.

“I think it’s time we find out.”
