Chapter 5 - The House That Was Already Empty

Emily was discharged shortly after seven that evening.
The contractions had slowed.
The baby remained stable.
Dr. Keller ordered strict rest and an immediate return if anything changed.
Emily expected to go to Raymond’s house.
Instead, she asked security to take her home.
Raymond objected.
“You should not be alone.”
“I won’t be.”
Sarah sat beside her in the car.
Two hospital security officers followed in another vehicle.
Emily needed to see her house before Preston could erase whatever he had left behind.
The gates opened at 7:42.
The house looked exactly as it had that morning.
Porch lights glowing.
White tulips beside the front steps.
A package from the nursery furniture company waiting near the door.
But inside, something felt wrong.
Emily noticed it before Sarah did.
Preston’s shoes were gone.
The drawer where he kept his watches was empty.
Half his suits had disappeared.
Emily walked upstairs slowly.
In their bedroom, the closet doors stood open.
Sarah looked around.
“He moved out.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She touched the empty shelf where Preston kept his passport case.
“He planned to.”
They searched the study.
Nothing.
Then Emily remembered the locked cabinet beneath Preston’s desk.
He had always said it contained old tax documents.
Sarah called a locksmith.
Nine minutes later, the cabinet opened.
There were no old tax documents.
There were two prepaid phones.
A passport.
Bank statements.
A copy of Emily’s trust paperwork.
And a thick envelope labeled FAMILY RESTRUCTURING.
Sarah opened it.
Divorce petition.
Draft custody schedule.
Property transfer proposal.
Psychological evaluation request.
Emily read the pages without speaking.
Preston had begun preparing them three months earlier.
Before the kick.
Before the hospital.
Before Emily had even admitted to herself that Vanessa existed.
Sarah’s face hardened.
“This is not a reaction.”
Emily nodded.
“It’s a plan.”
Then she saw another folder.
SAINT CLAIRE PROXY.
Inside was a copy of the forged voting authorization.
Attached to it was an email printout.
From Preston to Charles.
WE ONLY NEED HER SIGNATURE TO HOLD UNTIL THE REFINANCE CLOSES.
Emily read it twice.
Sarah whispered,
“Oh my God.”
Below that email was Charles’s response.
THEN MAKE SURE SHE DOESN’T START ASKING QUESTIONS.
Emily felt the baby move.
She placed her hand beneath her stomach.
Sarah watched her.
“Emily.”
“I’m okay.”
“You don’t have to be okay.”
Emily looked at the bedroom she had shared with Preston for nearly a decade.
On the dresser sat their wedding photograph.
She crossed the room.
For a moment, Sarah thought she was going to smash it.
Emily did not.
She turned the frame facedown.
Then she picked up the entire folder.
“Call Raymond.”
Sarah reached for her phone.
Emily stopped her.
“No.”
May you like
Her expression changed.
“Call the police first.”
