Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Name

Four hospital security officers stepped into the hallway first.
Behind them came a tall man in a charcoal suit with silver hair, a black overcoat folded across one arm, and an expression so controlled that it frightened Emily more than anger would have.
Raymond Saint Claire did not look at Preston.
He did not look at Vanessa.
He walked directly to Emily.
“Where did she hit you?”
Emily touched the tender place beneath her ribs.
Raymond’s jaw hardened.
“Twice.”
The nurse behind the desk spoke before Emily could.
“Mr. Saint Claire, I witnessed the second strike.”
Preston’s face changed.
For the first time since Emily had entered the hallway, his confidence cracked.
“Raymond, this is a family misunderstanding.”
Raymond slowly turned.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“This is an assault inside my hospital.”
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“Your hospital?”
Preston stepped forward.
“Don’t start with that.”
Raymond looked at him as if he were something unpleasant stuck to the bottom of a shoe.
Then he pointed toward the silver lettering on the glass wall.
“Read the second name.”
Whitmore-Saint Claire Medical Center.
Vanessa stared.
Preston’s throat moved.
Raymond continued.
“Saint Claire Health Holdings owns sixty-eight percent of this facility, the land beneath it, the maternity pavilion, the surgical tower, and the debt your father used to renovate the east wing.”
Emily watched the color drain from Vanessa’s face.
Preston tried to recover.
“That doesn’t mean you can storm in here and threaten me.”
“I haven’t threatened you.”
Raymond glanced at the nearest security officer.
“Secure the surveillance footage from this entire floor.”
Preston stiffened.
“Raymond.”
“Disable outside access to the files.”
The officer nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
“Notify legal.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Notify the chief medical officer.”
Preston moved toward him.
“This is insane.”
Raymond finally raised his voice.
“Take one more step toward my niece and find out how insane I can become.”
The hallway fell silent.
Emily had never heard him speak that way.
Not even at her mother’s funeral.
A woman in navy scrubs rushed through the doors.
Dr. Caroline Pierce, Emily’s obstetrician.
She looked at Emily’s face, then the red mark beneath the edge of her dress.
“Emily, come with me now.”
Preston reached for her arm.
Raymond stepped between them.
“You don’t touch her again.”
“She’s my wife.”
Raymond stared at him.
“Not for much longer if she has any sense.”
Emily should have felt embarrassed.
Instead, she felt strangely light.
Dr. Pierce guided her toward an examination room.
Vanessa called after them.
“She attacked me first!”
The nurse behind the desk immediately shook her head.
“No, she didn’t.”
Vanessa stared at her.
The nurse swallowed.
Then she lifted her chin.
“I saw everything.”
Preston’s voice dropped.
“You need to be very careful about what you think you saw.”
Raymond turned slowly.
That was the wrong sentence.
Everyone knew it.
Raymond pulled out his phone.
“Security.”
One officer stepped closer.
“Escort Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Cross to Conference Room C.”
Preston exploded.
“You can’t detain me!”
“I can remove you from private property.”
“This is my family’s hospital!”
Raymond’s expression did not change.
“Your family owns twelve percent.”
Preston froze.
Emily stopped at the examination-room door.
Twelve percent?
Preston had always told her the Whitmores controlled everything.
Raymond looked at her.
Something passed between them.
Regret.
Warning.
And something else.
Something Emily could not identify.
Dr. Pierce closed the door behind her.
Ten minutes later, Emily lay beneath a warm blanket while a fetal monitor traced her son’s heartbeat across a screen.
Strong.
Steady.
Alive.
Emily finally exhaled.
Dr. Pierce examined the bruising carefully.
“No immediate signs of placental separation.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“But I want you monitored.”
“Okay.”
Dr. Pierce hesitated.
“There’s something else.”
Emily opened her eyes.
The doctor lowered her voice.
“Before you arrived today, someone accessed your maternity file.”
Emily frowned.
“Preston?”
“No.”
Dr. Pierce turned the screen toward her.
The access log displayed a name.
VANESSA CROSS.
Emily stared at it.
“That’s impossible.”
“She isn’t medical staff.”
“I know.”
Dr. Pierce clicked another entry.
“And she didn’t just view your appointment schedule.”
Emily’s heart began beating faster.
“She opened your lab work.”
Another click.
“Your ultrasound reports.”
Another.
“And your emergency contact information.”
Emily slowly sat up.
“Why?”
Dr. Pierce looked toward the closed door.
“That’s what worries me.”
Then the monitor beside Emily suddenly began beeping.
Not because of the baby.
Because a hospital-wide security alert had appeared on the computer.
UNAUTHORIZED REMOTE DELETION ATTEMPT DETECTED.
Dr. Pierce stared at the screen.
May you like
Emily whispered the only question that mattered.
“What are they trying to erase?”
