Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Agent Reyes traced the call.

An abandoned warehouse district six miles away.

Federal teams moved.

Raymond wanted Emily nowhere near it.

This time she agreed.

Her father had survived twelve years by avoiding Charles Whitmore.

Emily would not become the reason he failed now.

For forty agonizing minutes, no one knew what happened.

Then Agent Reyes called.

“We have Andrew.”

Emily stopped breathing.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

“What about Marcus?”

“Also alive.”

The agents had arrested him after a brief standoff.

Andrew had been wounded in the shoulder.

Nothing life-threatening.

Emily covered her face.

Raymond turned away, wiping his own eyes.

Andrew arrived at Whitmore-Saint Claire under federal protection.

Emily waited inside her private room.

The door opened.

And her father walked in.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray at the temples.

But alive.

Neither spoke.

Emily crossed the room first.

Andrew caught her carefully.

She buried her face against his chest.

Twelve years disappeared.

For several minutes, there was no conspiracy.

No money.

No hospitals.

Only a daughter holding the father she had mourned.

“I’m sorry,” Andrew whispered.

Emily cried harder.

“You don’t get twelve years back.”

“I know.”

“I hated you for dying.”

“I know.”

“I needed you.”

“I know.”

She stepped back.

Then hugged him again.

Later, Andrew gave investigators the final pieces.

Marcus had altered Claire’s medication.

Charles authorized financial crimes.

Gerald performed intimidation.

Several executives accepted bribes.

And Preston?

Andrew looked at Emily.

“Preston wasn’t part of the old conspiracy.”

“But he targeted me later.”

“Yes.”

“He knew enough.”

“Yes.”

Andrew’s voice softened.

“He made terrible choices.”

Emily looked away.

“But?”

“He also contacted me three weeks ago.”

Her head snapped around.

“What?”

“Anonymous message.”

“Why?”

“He said he believed his father was planning something involving your pregnancy.”

Emily stared.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“He claimed he needed proof.”

“That sounds like Preston.”

Andrew nodded.

“He wanted to save you without admitting why you were in danger.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Because admitting it would expose him.”

“Yes.”

That was Preston’s tragedy.

Even when he tried to do something right, he did it through cowardice.

Andrew handed Emily a small recorder.

“He sent this to me.”

Preston’s voice played.

If anything happens to Emily, Charles caused it.

I helped my father get close to her because I thought we needed the Saint Claire shares.

I told myself I loved her enough to make the lie acceptable.

I was wrong.

Emily stopped the recording.

She did not need more.

The truth no longer required nuance.

Preston loved her.

Preston betrayed her.

Both could exist.

Neither erased the other.

The next morning, Raymond executed the financial counterattack.

Saint Claire called Whitmore debt covenants.

Emergency restructuring began.

Charles was suspended by the board.

Marcus’s arrest triggered compliance provisions.

Several lenders joined Saint Claire’s rescue proposal.

By sunset, Charles Whitmore no longer controlled the hospital system carrying his name.

Emily watched the emergency board meeting remotely.

Charles shouted.

Threatened.

Accused.

Then Raymond made the motion.

“Transfer interim control to Saint Claire Health Holdings.”

The votes appeared.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Charles’s face went blank.

His empire ended in less than thirty seconds.

Raymond looked into the camera.

“The motion passes.”

Emily exhaled.

Then Dr. Pierce entered quickly.

“Emily.”

Something in her expression changed everything.

Emily felt it a second later.

A warm rush.

She looked down.

May you like

Her water had broken.

Five weeks early.
