Chapter 5 - Phase Three

Preston lunged across the table for the laptop.

Security stopped him before his fingers reached it.

“What is that?”

Monica pulled the computer away.

“You tell us.”

“I’ve never seen it.”

Charles said nothing.

Emily looked directly at him.

He had gone pale.

“Uncle Ray.”

Raymond understood.

“Lock the building.”

Charles laughed nervously.

“You cannot imprison people.”

“Not people.”

Raymond looked at security.

“Data.”

He ordered every Whitmore administrative account frozen.

No remote access.

No record deletion.

No equipment authorization.

No pharmacy override privileges.

Then he called the hospital’s chief compliance officer.

Within minutes, the entire executive system was sealed.

Monica opened PHASE THREE.

The folder contained schedules.

Private nursing assignments.

Medication codes.

Operating-room reservations.

One planned admission bore Emily’s patient number.

Her due date had been altered.

Not by days.

By six weeks.

Tomorrow.

Dr. Pierce stared at the entry.

“This would place her at thirty-two weeks and one day.”

Emily’s mouth went dry.

“Why would anyone schedule me for delivery tomorrow?”

Another document answered.

EMERGENCY C-SECTION PROTOCOL.

Dr. Pierce’s face hardened.

“This isn’t a real protocol.”

“What does it say?”

“It instructs staff to administer medication Emily does not need.”

Raymond turned.

“What medication?”

“A drug combination that could cause severe maternal complications if improperly administered.”

Preston spun toward Charles.

“What did you do?”

Charles finally spoke.

“This is fabrication.”

Monica shook her head.

“The documents originated from an executive terminal registered to Whitmore Administrative Services.”

“That proves nothing.”

Then Vanessa’s voice came from the doorway.

“It proves everything.”

Everyone turned.

Two security officers stood beside her.

Her white coat was gone.

Without it, she looked smaller.

Less untouchable.

But the fear in her eyes was real.

Preston stared.

“Vanessa, shut up.”

She looked at him.

Something passed between them.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Panic.

“You said no one would get hurt.”

Emily felt the air leave her lungs.

Preston stepped forward.

“I never said anything because I never knew anything.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You knew enough.”

Charles shouted, “Get her out.”

Raymond did not even look at him.

“Vanessa stays.”

Vanessa hugged her arms around herself.

“Charles told me Phase Three was leverage.”

Emily asked, “What leverage?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Forcing Raymond to transfer the debt.”

Raymond frowned.

“What debt?”

“The Whitmore hospital debt.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Charles said if something happened during Emily’s delivery, Saint Claire Health would face a catastrophic lawsuit.”

Monica understood.

“They would claim hospital negligence.”

Vanessa nodded.

“And use settlement pressure to restructure ownership.”

Emily could barely process the cruelty.

“You were going to hurt me to bankrupt my uncle?”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“I swear.”

“You kicked me.”

Vanessa’s eyes dropped.

“I lost control.”

“You accessed my medical file.”

“Charles gave me credentials.”

“You signed the fake beneficiary document.”

Vanessa’s silence confirmed it.

Emily leaned back.

“And you believed no one would get hurt?”

Tears appeared in Vanessa’s eyes.

“I thought they were creating paperwork.”

Preston laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Vanessa spun toward him.

“You brought me into this!”

Emily stared.

Preston went still.

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You found me four years ago.”

Charles shouted again.

“Vanessa.”

She ignored him.

“You told me Emily was the key to keeping the hospital.”

Emily looked at Preston.

He shook his head.

“She’s lying.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You told me to become useful to your father.”

“Stop.”

“You told me to get close to Charles.”

“Stop.”

“You told me we would be together after the shares transferred.”

Emily felt strangely detached.

The affair was no longer even the worst betrayal.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“But then Charles started talking about the pregnancy.”

Preston’s face changed.

“What did he say?”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“That the easiest estate to control belonged to a child without a mother.”

Nobody moved.

Raymond’s chair scraped against the floor.

Charles backed toward the door.

Security blocked him.

Emily placed both hands over her stomach.

Her son kicked once.

Strong.

Alive.

She looked at Charles.

“You planned to kill me.”

Charles said nothing.

Then alarms suddenly rang through the hallway.

Dr. Pierce turned toward the monitor.

“What happened?”

A nurse rushed in.

“Pharmacy security breach.”

Raymond’s face hardened.

“Where?”

The nurse looked directly at Emily.

May you like

“Maternity medication storage.”

And one controlled drug had just been removed under Emily Whitmore’s patient number.
