Chapter 3 - The Name on the Test

Emily demanded answers.

Raymond demanded patience.

Neither got what they wanted.

Within an hour, Saint Claire legal counsel occupied two conference rooms.

Hospital security had restricted Preston’s administrative access.

Vanessa’s phone had been transferred to a forensic team.

Charles Whitmore was reportedly driving toward the hospital with three lawyers.

And Emily was still connected to a fetal monitor wondering what her unborn son had to do with a forged beneficiary form.

Dr. Pierce returned carrying a folder.

“Emily, I need to ask you something uncomfortable.”

Emily almost smiled.

“That seems to be today’s theme.”

“Did Preston ever request private genetic testing during your pregnancy?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

“No.”

Dr. Pierce placed the folder down.

“Then we have a serious privacy breach.”

Inside was a prenatal genetic screening report.

Emily recognized the hospital logo.

She recognized her own name.

But she had never seen the final page.

PATERNAL LINEAGE COMPARISON.

Her eyes moved lower.

SUBJECT B: PRESTON CHARLES WHITMORE.

Emily stared at Dr. Pierce.

“What is this?”

“Someone submitted a blood sample labeled as Preston’s.”

“For what purpose?”

“To compare hereditary markers.”

Emily’s pulse jumped.

“And?”

Dr. Pierce took a breath.

“The report indicates that the child you are carrying does not match the sample submitted under Preston’s name.”

Emily recoiled.

“That’s impossible.”

Raymond stood.

“Emily.”

“No.”

She shook her head harder.

“Preston is the father.”

“I’m not accusing you of anything,” Dr. Pierce said.

“He is the only man I’ve been with.”

“I believe you.”

“Then the test is wrong.”

“Or the sample labeled Preston Whitmore did not belong to Preston Whitmore.”

The room went silent.

Emily stared at the paper.

Raymond understood first.

“Someone wanted a test showing Preston wasn’t the father.”

Dr. Pierce nodded.

“That would be my concern.”

Emily felt sick.

A forged inheritance document.

A fabricated paternity result.

Her records accessed by Vanessa.

Charles trying to delete evidence.

“What would they do with this?”

Raymond’s voice became cold.

“Contest your marriage.”

Emily looked at him.

“More importantly, challenge any inheritance arrangement involving the child.”

The fetal monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Emily’s son had no idea adults were already fighting over assets connected to his existence.

A knock interrupted them.

Raymond’s attorney, Monica Hale, entered carrying a laptop.

“We found another document.”

Emily almost wanted to tell her to leave.

Instead she said, “Show me.”

Monica opened an email archive.

“Three weeks after your wedding, Preston’s attorneys drafted a spousal transfer agreement.”

“I never signed one.”

“It was never executed.”

“Why draft it?”

Monica scrolled.

“Because Charles believed you eventually would.”

An email appeared.

FROM: CHARLES WHITMORE.

TO: PRESTON WHITMORE.

The message was short.

GAIN HER TRUST.

DO NOT PUSH THE SHARES UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST CHILD.

Emily read it twice.

Then a third time.

Something inside her did not break.

It hardened.

Raymond watched her carefully.

“Em.”

“How many years?”

“What?”

“How many years have they been planning this?”

Monica hesitated.

“We found communications going back almost five.”

Emily laughed.

It sounded empty.

“My marriage is four years old.”

No one answered.

Another email appeared.

This one from Preston.

SHE THINKS I MET HER BY ACCIDENT.

Charles replied.

KEEP IT THAT WAY.

Emily closed the laptop.

Very gently.

“Get him.”

Raymond studied her.

“Emily.”

“I want Preston in this room.”

“That may not be wise.”

“I don’t care.”

“You are thirty-two weeks pregnant and—”

“I spent four years sleeping beside a man who may have researched me before he learned my favorite color.”

Her voice did not rise.

“I want to look at him when he lies.”

Raymond nodded once.

Ten minutes later, Preston entered with his attorney.

His confidence had partially returned.

He sat across from Emily.

“Are you finally ready to stop this circus?”

Emily looked at the man she had loved.

Then she pushed the forged paternity report across the table.

Preston’s face changed instantly.

Only for half a second.

But Emily saw it.

He knew.

She leaned back.

“Tell me why your family needed my baby to look illegitimate.”

Preston opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, the door burst open.

Charles Whitmore stood there.

And the first thing he shouted was not his son’s name.

May you like

It was Emily’s.

“Do not believe Raymond.”
