Chapter 4 - The Marriage Plan

Charles Whitmore looked like a man accustomed to entering rooms that immediately became his.

That evening, no one moved for him.

Two security officers blocked the doorway.

Raymond remained beside Emily.

Monica Hale closed the laptop.

Preston’s attorney quietly stopped speaking.

Charles stared at the forged paternity report.

Then at his son.

“You idiot.”

Preston stood.

“Dad.”

“I told you those files should never have existed.”

Emily felt something cold travel through her.

There it was.

Not denial.

Not outrage.

Confirmation.

Charles realized his mistake.

Too late.

Monica calmly pressed a button on her laptop.

“For the record, Mr. Whitmore, this meeting is being preserved pursuant to hospital security protocol.”

Charles’s face tightened.

“You have no authority—”

Raymond interrupted.

“I have every authority inside this building.”

Charles turned toward him.

“You think because your name is on the wall—”

“My company owns the wall.”

Emily almost would have enjoyed that sentence on another day.

Instead she kept looking at Preston.

“Was the bookstore planned?”

Preston sat back down.

“Emily, listen.”

“Yes or no.”

“Things became real between us.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Charles stepped forward.

“Marriage is complicated.”

Emily looked at him.

“Did you send your son to meet me?”

Charles’s silence answered.

Preston finally spoke.

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Four years collapsed into one syllable.

“Yes.”

The tulips.

The late-night conversations.

The proposal beneath the oak tree behind her childhood home.

The wedding vows.

The tears during the ultrasound.

All of it now stood beside that single word.

Preston leaned forward.

“But I fell in love with you.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“You researched me first.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my Saint Claire shares before I did.”

Preston hesitated.

“Yes.”

“You pretended not to understand why my uncle was protective.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe I was just some schoolteacher who married into your powerful family.”

His voice lowered.

“That part never mattered to me.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“It mattered enough for your father to write instructions.”

Charles cut in.

“The Whitmore hospital system was drowning.”

Raymond’s gaze sharpened.

Finally.

The motive.

Charles continued.

“Interest rates changed.”

“Poor investments,” Raymond said.

“Expansion costs increased.”

“Your personal withdrawals increased.”

Charles ignored him.

“We needed stable financing.”

Emily looked at Preston.

“And marrying me gave you leverage.”

“Potential leverage,” Charles corrected.

Emily turned toward him.

Charles’s arrogance was almost impressive.

“Your mother structured those shares with restrictions.”

Raymond said, “Restrictions preventing sale outside the Saint Claire bloodline.”

Charles nodded.

“But a spouse could gain economic control under certain estate conditions.”

Emily understood.

“The first child.”

Monica answered.

“If Emily died after giving birth without updating her estate documents, Preston could potentially act as administrator over assets held for the child.”

The room went silent.

Emily’s skin turned cold.

“Died?”

Preston shot to his feet.

“No.”

Charles snapped, “Sit down.”

“No.”

Preston looked at Emily.

“That was never part of anything.”

Emily studied his face.

For the first time, he looked honestly afraid.

She hated that she could still tell the difference.

Monica opened another file.

“We found insurance policies.”

Preston went still.

Charles’s expression hardened.

Emily whispered, “On me?”

“Three.”

“How much?”

“Combined value of eighteen million dollars.”

Emily stared at Preston.

“I didn’t sign those.”

Monica’s answer was quiet.

“We believe your signatures were digitally reproduced.”

Preston turned on his father.

“You said those were temporary collateral instruments.”

Charles replied, “They were.”

“You told me they couldn’t activate without her authorization.”

Charles said nothing.

Preston stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

For the first time, Emily saw a fracture between father and son.

Charles looked at him with contempt.

“I saved everything your grandfather built.”

Raymond’s voice became dangerous.

“With forged signatures?”

Charles smiled without humor.

“You Saint Claires love pretending your wealth is cleaner than everyone else’s.”

Raymond moved forward.

Emily touched his sleeve.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

She looked at Charles.

“Why the fake paternity test?”

Charles’s expression changed.

Not much.

Enough.

Emily knew the answer was important.

Charles glanced at Preston.

Then toward the lawyers.

Emily leaned forward.

“You were willing to confess to planning my marriage, but not that.”

Charles remained silent.

Monica’s phone vibrated.

She checked it.

Her face immediately changed.

“What?”

Raymond asked.

Monica turned the screen toward him.

“Forensic recovered the deleted folder.”

“What folder?”

She swallowed.

“It’s labeled PHASE THREE.”

Emily stared.

Monica opened the first recovered document.

At the top was Emily’s name.

Underneath was a date.

Six weeks from now.

May you like

And beside it were two words that made everyone in the room freeze.

OBSTETRIC EMERGENCY.
