Chapter 7 - No More Lies

Preston stared at the screen as if he could force the image to become someone else.
Emily did not blink.
The video continued.
Charles poured whiskey.
“If Emily dies before producing an heir, Raymond retains too much control.”
Preston’s younger face tightened.
“I said I’ll get her to sign.”
“She won’t.”
“She trusts me.”
“Not enough.”
The recording crackled.
Then Preston asked, “What exactly is Phase Three?”
Charles looked toward the camera’s direction without realizing it existed.
“Insurance.”
The video ended.
Preston stood quickly.
“That proves I heard the words.”
Emily stared at him.
“You said understood.”
“I didn’t know he meant killing you.”
“You never asked?”
“I thought he meant legal pressure.”
“You never asked?”
Preston’s voice broke.
“I was trying to save my family.”
Emily’s face remained expressionless.
“You keep saying family.”
She touched her stomach.
“We were your family.”
Preston fell silent.
Emily removed her wedding ring.
It had belonged to Preston’s grandmother.
He had slid it onto her finger beneath white tulips and promises.
She placed it on the table.
The tiny sound seemed louder than shouting.
“Emily.”
“No.”
“I love you.”
“No.”
“I know you don’t believe—”
“I believe you loved what I could give you.”
His eyes filled.
“Please.”
She pushed the ring toward him.
“Your father may have planned to kill me.”
Preston looked down.
“But you built the road he intended to use.”
He said nothing.
Emily stood.
Raymond reached to help her.
She shook her head.
“I can walk.”
She walked out without looking back.
The next morning, Monica Hale filed emergency orders protecting Emily’s assets.
Every Saint Claire share remained locked.
No beneficiary changes.
No spousal claims.
No proxy authority.
No transfer rights.
At 9:14 a.m., Emily signed divorce papers.
At 9:26, she revoked Preston’s medical decision authority.
At 9:41, she changed the baby’s emergency guardian designation to Raymond.
At 10:03, federal investigators arrived.
Because attempted fraud involving hospital systems, interstate insurance policies, forged signatures, and patient records had moved far beyond a family dispute.
Charles refused interviews.
Gerald requested an attorney.
Vanessa requested immunity.
Preston requested Emily.
She refused.
Then something unexpected happened.
Whitmore Medical Group’s board called Raymond.
They had discovered the executive lockdown.
Without Saint Claire financing, three Whitmore hospitals could default within months.
Charles had hidden the extent of the debt.
Raymond entered Emily’s room holding financial reports.
“He borrowed against everything.”
Emily scanned the pages.
“How bad?”
“Seven hundred eighty million.”
She stared.
“How?”
“Expansion.”
“Vanity.”
“Yes.”
“And fraud?”
“Possibly.”
Emily noticed a column.
Saint Claire Guarantee Exposure.
“Are we liable?”
“Some.”
“How much?”
“Potentially two hundred million.”
Emily leaned back.
So Charles had not only wanted her shares.
He had already attached her family’s company to Whitmore risk.
“If his system collapses, ours takes the hit.”
Raymond nodded.
“Which is why we cannot simply walk away.”
Emily finally understood Charles’s confidence.
He had created financial hostages.
Hospitals.
Employees.
Patients.
Entire communities.
He had counted on Raymond choosing innocent lives over revenge.
Emily looked at the reports again.
“Then we don’t destroy the hospitals.”
Raymond waited.
“We remove the Whitmores.”
A slow smile touched his face.
There she was.
The part of Emily inherited from her mother.
“What are you thinking?”
“Debt conversion.”
Raymond raised an eyebrow.
Emily pointed at the guarantees.
“If Saint Claire covers the emergency liabilities, can the debt convert into equity?”
“Under certain default clauses.”
“How much?”
Raymond started calculating.
His expression changed.
“Enough.”
“To do what?”
“If multiple covenants are triggered…”
He looked up.
“We could acquire controlling interest in the Whitmore system.”
Emily nodded.
“Then do it.”
Raymond almost smiled.
“My sister would be proud of you.”
Emily swallowed.
“Don’t say that yet.”
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She nearly ignored it.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed her childhood home in Ohio.
Taken that morning.
A message followed.
YOU THINK THIS IS ABOUT HOSPITALS.
ASK RAYMOND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO YOUR MOTHER.
May you like
Emily slowly looked up at her uncle.
And for the first time since he arrived, she wondered whether Raymond Saint Claire had secrets too.
