Chapter 16 - The Old Clue Returns

The evacuation was caused by a gas leak.

At least that was the official explanation.

Raymond did not believe it.

Neither did Emily.

Twenty-seven maternity patients were transferred.

Ambulances crowded the entrance.

Staff poured into the third floor.

Controlled access became chaos.

Exactly the kind of chaos someone could use.

Emily’s room was moved into a private secured wing.

Two guards stood outside.

Dr. Pierce remained personally responsible for every medication.

“No substitutions.”

“No external orders.”

“No transfer requests.”

Emily agreed.

Then a nurse delivered a sealed envelope.

No return name.

Inside was her mother’s old brass key.

Emily stared at it.

The key Preston had stolen.

A note accompanied it.

HE GAVE IT BACK.

Emily looked at Raymond.

“Preston?”

Security checked cameras.

Preston had not entered the floor.

But his attorney had delivered documents downstairs.

One envelope disappeared between legal intake and maternity.

Emily called Preston.

It was the first time she initiated contact.

He answered immediately.

“Emily.”

“Did you send the key?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I should have never taken it.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

He sounded broken.

“But it’s what I can do right now.”

Emily looked at the brass key.

“Why did my father warn me about Saint Claire East?”

Silence.

Preston whispered, “Because Marcus runs the private pharmacy contractor there.”

Emily stood.

“What?”

“Off the books.”

“You knew?”

“I found it in my father’s emails.”

“When?”

“Today.”

“Why didn’t you tell investigators?”

“I did.”

Agent Reyes confirmed moments later.

Marcus had indirect financial control over the Saint Claire East pharmacy contractor.

The gas leak became immediately suspicious.

Investigators searched the facility.

They discovered damaged ventilation equipment.

Intentional damage.

The evacuation had been engineered.

But why move dozens of patients?

Then Dr. Pierce understood.

“To bury Emily inside a transfer wave.”

Raymond looked at her.

“If someone issued a false transfer order for Emily, it could appear routine.”

Emily remembered PHASE THREE.

Emergency C-section.

Medication.

Transfer.

The old plan had not been abandoned.

It had been adapted.

A hospital administrator rushed into the room.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“An ambulance crew is downstairs asking for Emily Whitmore.”

Everyone froze.

“Who ordered it?”

“System says Dr. Pierce.”

Dr. Pierce went pale.

“I did not.”

Raymond ordered the ambulance detained.

Security arrived.

The crew had fake credentials.

The driver fled.

The second man was arrested.

Inside the ambulance, investigators found sedatives.

Restraints.

Forged transfer records.

Destination: Saint Claire East.

Emily stared at the paperwork.

“They were going to take me into an evacuated hospital.”

Agent Reyes nodded grimly.

“And probably create whatever emergency they needed.”

Raymond turned toward security.

“Find Marcus.”

They did.

Or rather, they found his car.

Abandoned.

Inside was blood.

No Marcus.

Then Emily’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man’s voice said, “Emily?”

Her heart stopped.

She knew the voice without knowing how.

Something inside a child remembers.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Then Andrew Mercer whispered, “You need to leave that hospital.”

Emily started crying.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

“Why?”

“Because Marcus isn’t running.”

Andrew’s voice hardened.

“He’s hunting the person who can destroy all of them.”

“Who?”

“Me.”

A crash sounded over the phone.

Emily stood.

“Dad?”

May you like

Gunfire erupted faintly in the background.

Then the call died.
