Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Everything they had fought to prevent suddenly became real.

Not because Charles ordered it.

Not because Marcus planned it.

Because babies did not care about board votes.

Emily was thirty-two weeks pregnant and in premature labor.

Dr. Pierce moved quickly.

“Contractions?”

“Not yet.”

“Pressure?”

“A little.”

“Any bleeding?”

“No.”

The room filled with medical staff Emily personally recognized.

Raymond stood outside.

Andrew sat beside him.

Preston heard through his attorney.

He came to the hospital.

Security stopped him downstairs.

He did not argue.

He simply asked that someone tell Emily he was there.

Emily heard the message.

She stared at the ceiling.

Then said, “Let him wait.”

Hours passed.

Doctors attempted to delay labor safely.

The baby remained stable.

Emily rested.

For the first time, victory felt meaningless.

What mattered was one heartbeat on one monitor.

Andrew sat beside her.

“You were always stubborn.”

Emily smiled weakly.

“You disappeared for twelve years.”

“Fair.”

She looked at him.

“Did Mom forgive you?”

“For leaving?”

“For anything.”

Andrew’s eyes filled.

“We forgave each other constantly.”

Emily looked toward the door.

Marriage suddenly felt less like a promise never to hurt someone.

More like what people did after hurt arrived.

Could she ever forgive Preston?

Maybe.

Could she ever trust him again?

No.

Those were different questions.

At midnight, contractions strengthened.

Dr. Pierce made a decision.

“We may deliver tonight.”

Emily nodded.

She was afraid.

She did not hide it.

Raymond kissed her forehead.

Andrew squeezed her hand.

Then a nurse entered.

“There’s someone Emily asked to see.”

Emily frowned.

She had not asked.

Preston appeared at the doorway.

The nurse immediately looked confused.

“I was told—”

Security rushed forward.

Preston raised both hands.

“I didn’t tell her that.”

Emily stared.

“Then who authorized you upstairs?”

Everyone froze.

Preston slowly turned.

His visitor badge displayed a digital approval.

Authorized by Raymond Saint Claire.

Raymond looked at it.

“I did not approve that.”

Another copied credential.

Security moved toward Preston.

Then every light in the room went out.

Emergency power should have activated instantly.

It didn’t.

Dr. Pierce shouted for backup.

Monitors switched to battery.

The hallway filled with alarms.

Raymond’s security detail drew flashlights.

Emily grabbed the bedrail.

“Where’s Preston?”

No answer.

Then a shadow moved near the doorway.

Someone slammed into a security officer.

Another figure entered.

Emily heard Andrew shout.

A flashlight beam swept across the room.

Marcus Whitmore stood inside.

Blood on his shirt.

A gun in his hand.

He had escaped federal transport.

And behind him was Charles.

Charles looked at Emily.

“Give me the shares.”

Raymond stepped between them.

May you like

Charles smiled.

“Or tonight the Saint Claire line ends in this room.”
