Chapter 1 - The Locked Drawer

Ryan Whitmore had seen fear before.
He had seen it in boardrooms when companies were collapsing.
He had seen it in emergency rooms when doctors asked families to prepare for the worst.
But he had never seen fear like the kind in his three-year-old son's eyes.
Oliver lay against Maya's chest on the nursery floor, his tiny body trembling as he fought for every breath.
Maya had blood running from a cut near her eyebrow.
One side of her face was already swelling.
Her fingers shook as she held Oliver upright and whispered that Daddy was there.
Ryan dropped beside them.
"Where is his inhaler?"
Maya looked toward Evelyn.
"Ask your mother."
Evelyn Whitmore stood near the crib wearing a cream designer suit that looked untouched by the chaos surrounding her.
Her silver-blonde hair remained perfectly arranged.
Her expression remained strangely calm.
"Ryan, don't listen to her."
Ryan stared at his mother.
"What does that mean?"
Evelyn slowly raised both hands.
"Your wife had another episode."
Maya's eyes widened.
"Another episode?"
"She became hysterical."
Evelyn pointed toward the broken lamp near the wall.
"She started throwing things."
Ryan looked at Maya.
Then he noticed the scratches on her wrist.
They looked like finger marks.
Maya tightened her hold around Oliver.
"She took his inhaler."
Evelyn gave a small exhausted sigh.
"You see what I mean?"
Police officers crowded the hallway behind Ryan.
One paramedic moved immediately toward Oliver.
Another officer photographed the damaged nursery.
Ryan barely noticed them.
His attention was fixed on his mother's face.
He had known that face his entire life.
It was the face Evelyn used at charity galas.
At funerals.
At board meetings.
Whenever everyone else was emotional, Evelyn became calmer.
That calmness had once made Ryan trust her.
Now it frightened him.
Officer Daniel Ruiz stepped toward a white dresser beside the nursery window.
One drawer was locked.
"Mrs. Whitmore, whose drawer is this?"
Maya answered first.
"I've never seen it locked before."
Evelyn's eyes shifted toward the dresser.
Only for a second.
But Ryan saw it.
Ruiz saw it too.
"We're going to need that opened."
Evelyn folded her arms.
"There are private family documents inside."
Oliver suddenly coughed violently.
Maya whispered his name.
The paramedic fitted an oxygen mask over his face.
Ryan stood.
"Open it."
Evelyn stared at her son.
"Ryan."
"Open the drawer."
When she refused, Officer Ruiz forced the small lock.
The drawer slid open.
No one spoke.
Inside were copies of Oliver's medical records.
Maya's therapy records from after Oliver's difficult birth.
Photographs of Maya crying.
Photographs of Maya arguing with Ryan.
Photographs taken through partially opened doors.
There was also a folder labeled TEMPORARY EMERGENCY CUSTODY.
Ryan pulled it out.
The first page carried his son's name.
The second carried Maya's.
The third described her as emotionally unstable, physically dangerous, and incapable of protecting her child.
Ryan's hands went cold.
At the bottom of the stack was another document.
A prepared statement.
It began with the words:
"My daughter-in-law, Maya Whitmore, has repeatedly endangered my grandson."
Ryan looked up.
His mother was no longer smiling.
For the first time that night, Evelyn Whitmore looked afraid.

And Ryan suddenly understood that the nightmare had not begun tonight.
Tonight was only the night they discovered it.
