Chapter 7 - What Was in the Nebulizer

Oliver's pediatric pulmonologist ordered additional tests.
At first, the decision seemed precautionary.
Then a nurse discovered something unusual inside the portable nebulizer used at home.
The remaining solution did not match Oliver's prescription.
Dr. Natalie Mercer entered the hospital conference room carrying a sealed evidence container.
"We need the lab to confirm this."
Ryan leaned forward.
"But?"
"But someone appears to have diluted his medication."
Maya closed her eyes.
Ryan felt his stomach twist.
"Would that cause the attack?"
"It could make the treatment less effective."
Dr. Mercer chose her words carefully.
"And for a child with Oliver's history, ineffective treatment during a respiratory flare can become dangerous very quickly."
Maya pressed both hands against the table.
"She knew."
Ryan looked at her.
"My mother isn't a doctor."
"No."
Maya's voice shook.
"But she asked questions."
"What questions?"
"About how long Oliver could go without medication."
"About what symptoms meant he needed the hospital."
"About whether anxiety made attacks worse."
Ryan remembered Evelyn attending appointments.
He had thought she was being an involved grandmother.
Now each memory looked different.
Officer Ruiz asked the hospital to preserve everything.
The investigation expanded.
By evening, Evelyn was no longer simply being questioned about forged documents.
She was being investigated for child endangerment, evidence tampering, unlawful surveillance, and conspiracy.
Ryan should have felt relieved.
Instead, he felt hollow.
His mother had raised him after his father died.
She had taught him to negotiate.
To speak carefully.
To never display weakness.
She had also spent years convincing him that only she could identify people who wanted to use the Whitmore name.
Apparently that included Maya.
Ryan finally understood that Evelyn had never accepted his marriage.
Maya was not from wealth.
She had been a pediatric nurse before marrying Ryan.
She did not care about society events.
She refused to let Evelyn control Oliver's schedule.
Worst of all, she had given Ryan a family that existed outside his mother's authority.
Evelyn could tolerate a wife.
She could not tolerate losing control of her son.
Officer Ruiz received another call.
He stepped away.
When he returned, his face was grim.
"They found a storage unit."
"Whose?"
"Evelyn's."
Ryan frowned.
"My mother has three houses."
"Why would she need a storage unit?"
Ruiz placed a photograph on the table.
The unit contained plastic boxes labeled MAYA.
There were dozens.
One held copies of Maya's prescriptions.
One held printouts of private messages.
One held photographs of Maya leaving therapy appointments.
Another contained Oliver's spare clothing.
Maya stared at the picture.
"Why his clothes?"
Ruiz did not answer immediately.
Then he placed down a second photograph.
A small bedroom had been set up inside the storage facility's attached office.
A toddler bed.
Books.
Toys.
Diapers.
A night-light.
Everything Oliver would need for several days.
Ryan stared at the image.
May you like
His mother had not only planned to remove Oliver from Maya.
She had prepared a place to hide him.
