Chapter 9 - The Suitcase Under the Bed

Maya had already packed one suitcase.
It was hidden beneath the guest-room bed.
Inside were clothes for herself and Oliver.
Birth certificates.
Insurance documents.
A stuffed dinosaur.
Three hundred dollars in cash.
A spare inhaler Evelyn did not know existed.
Ryan discovered the suitcase only because Maya told him where to look.
Police escorted them back to the house the next morning.
The nursery remained sealed.
Yellow evidence tape crossed the doorway.
Ryan walked through his own home and barely recognized it.
Maya entered the guest room.
She pulled out the suitcase.
"I started packing after I found the first camera."
Ryan touched the small dinosaur.
"Why cash?"
"Because your mother knew every credit card I used."
Ryan closed his eyes.
Maya continued.
"I opened a separate bank account."
"She found out."
"How?"
"I still don't know."
Ryan thought of Claire.
His assistant had access to family financial summaries.
Maya watched his face.
"You see why I stopped telling you things?"
Ryan nodded.
Every secret Maya had kept now looked less like dishonesty and more like survival.
Officer Ruiz entered holding a sealed plastic bag.
"We found something else."
Inside was a small voice recorder.
It had been taped beneath the guest-room nightstand.
Maya stared at it.
Ryan did too.
Ruiz played a recovered clip.
Maya's voice filled the room.
"I can't keep living like this."
Then Ryan's voice.
"What do you want me to do?"
The clip ended.
Ruiz played the edited file recovered from Evelyn's computer.
Maya's voice said:
"I can't keep Oliver safe."
Then Ryan's voice said:
"What do you want me to do?"
Maya covered her mouth.
The original conversation had been about Evelyn.
The edited recording made Maya sound as though she had confessed she could not care for her own child.
Ryan felt physically ill.
Ruiz continued.
"There are at least seventeen edited audio files."
"Some were included in the draft custody packet."
Maya stared at him.
"So even conversations inside this room were recorded."
"Yes."
Ryan walked toward the window.
He wanted to destroy something.
Instead, he forced his hands open.
This was exactly what Evelyn expected people to do.
React.
Lose control.
Create evidence for her.
Ryan turned.
"What's next?"
Ruiz looked at him.
"We follow the money."
The money led to Whitmore Family Services.
It was a charitable foundation Evelyn had controlled for twenty-three years.
Thousands of dollars had been paid to investigators, consultants, and a behavioral specialist.
Ryan recognized the specialist's name.
Dr. Martin Keene.
He had met Keene twice.
Evelyn had introduced him as an old family friend.
According to the invoices, Keene had been preparing an expert opinion about Maya's mental health.
There was just one problem.
He had never evaluated Maya.

Yet his report had already been written.
And on the last page, Dr. Keene recommended immediate separation of mother and child.
