Chapter 11 - Claire's Confession
Ryan did not respond directly.
He forwarded Claire's messages to Officer Ruiz.
A controlled meeting was arranged at a downtown parking structure.
Claire arrived wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.
She looked nothing like the polished executive assistant Ryan knew.
She looked terrified.
Ruiz recorded everything.
Claire began crying before anyone asked the first question.
"I never meant for Oliver to get hurt."
Ryan stared at her.
"But you knew something was happening."
Claire nodded.
"At first, Evelyn told me Maya was seriously ill."
"She said you were in denial."
"She said we were protecting Oliver."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"And the forged signatures?"
Claire looked down.
"She said you had authorized everything verbally."
"You knew I hadn't."
"Eventually."
Ryan stood.
Ruiz immediately warned him with a glance.
Ryan sat again.
Claire wiped her face.
"By then, I was already involved."
"So you kept going."
"Evelyn had copies of emails where I'd used your digital authorization."
"She said if I stopped, she would tell the board I had been stealing your identity."
Ryan almost laughed at the irony.
"She trapped you using the crime you were helping her commit."
Claire nodded miserably.
Then she revealed the larger plan.
Evelyn intended to file the emergency custody petition the morning after Oliver was removed from Maya.
Ryan would be told that Maya had suffered a psychiatric crisis.
A private physician would recommend that Maya be admitted for evaluation.
Oliver would remain temporarily with Evelyn.
Ryan would be pressured to sign the petition to "protect his son."
"And if I refused?"
Claire's eyes filled with fear.
"She had something prepared for you too."
Ryan froze.
"What?"
Claire handed Ruiz a flash drive.
Inside were financial records designed to make Ryan appear to have secretly moved company funds.
They were false.
But they looked convincing.
Evelyn planned to threaten him with a board investigation if he refused to cooperate.
Maya stared at Ryan.
"She was going to control both of us."
Claire nodded.
"She said once Maya was gone, Ryan would eventually understand."
Ryan's face tightened.
"Understand what?"
Claire whispered.
"That families survive only when one person is strong enough to make the difficult decisions."
Ryan knew that sentence.
His mother had said it throughout his childhood.
After his father's death.
After firing executives.
After cutting relatives out of the family trust.
Evelyn called control responsibility.
Claire gave police one final piece of information.
"There is another file."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"Where?"
"Whitmore Holdings."
"Private archive level."
"Only Evelyn and Ryan have access."
Ryan frowned.
"What file?"
Claire hesitated.
"Evelyn called it Project Harbor."
Maya looked at Ryan.
He had never heard the name.

"She started Project Harbor before Oliver was born."
