Chapter 15 - The Witness Who Disappeared
Two days after the bail hearing, Claire Donnelly vanished.
She missed a scheduled meeting with prosecutors.
Her apartment was empty.
Her phone was turned off.
Her car remained in the garage.
Officer Ruiz immediately treated the disappearance seriously.
Ryan feared the worst.
Maya feared something else.
"What if she ran?"
Ruiz nodded.
"Possible."
"She knows how serious this is."
"She may have panicked."
But Ryan knew Claire.
She was afraid.
Yet she had also sounded relieved after finally telling the truth.
Running did not fit.
Police searched her apartment again.
They found a note hidden inside a kitchen drawer.
It contained only one sentence.
"If anything happens, check the greenhouse."
Ryan recognized the reference.
The Whitmore family's old Lake Forest mansion had a large abandoned greenhouse.
Evelyn had not used the property in years.
Police arrived before sunset.
The greenhouse was empty.
But beneath a potting table, they found Claire's phone.
It had been smashed.
Security footage from a nearby road showed a dark SUV entering the estate the previous night.
The vehicle belonged to Whitmore Family Services.
Evelyn was in custody.
Someone else was still following instructions.
Ruiz obtained warrants for several senior foundation employees.
One name stood out.
Gerald Mercer.
Evelyn's longtime chief of staff.
Ryan had known Gerald since childhood.
He had attended Thomas Whitmore's funeral.
He had driven Ryan to school after his father's death.
He had been in the background of almost every important family event.
When police reached Gerald's apartment, he was gone.
A laptop remained behind.
Inside were encrypted files.
One folder had been opened recently.
Its title was CLEANUP.
Maya stared at Ryan.
"This isn't over."
Ryan knew she was right.
Evelyn had built systems designed to function even when she was absent.
Ruiz's team decrypted the first file.
It contained instructions for discrediting Claire if she testified.
The second contained payments to a private security contractor.
The third contained a map.
Ryan recognized the location.
An abandoned Whitmore hunting lodge near the Wisconsin border.
Police moved immediately.
Three hours later, Claire was found alive.
She was locked inside an upstairs bedroom.
Gerald Mercer was arrested nearby while attempting to leave in another vehicle.
Claire had bruises on her arms but no major injuries.
She told police Gerald had demanded that she sign a statement blaming herself for the entire conspiracy.
When she refused, he threatened her family.
Then Claire said something that expanded the case again.
"Gerald kept saying Mrs. Whitmore couldn't be blamed."
"He said she was protecting the family."
Ruiz asked:
"From Maya?"
Claire shook her head.

"From anyone who might discover what happened to Thomas Whitmore."
