Chapter 17 - Mother and Son

Evelyn requested another meeting.

This time, Ryan almost refused.

Then he agreed for one reason.

He wanted to ask about his father.

They sat across from each other in the same interview room.

Evelyn looked older.

Not weak.

But stripped of the illusion that nothing could touch her.

Ryan placed a photograph of Thomas on the table.

She looked at it.

Her expression flickered.

"Did you have him killed?"

Evelyn looked at Ryan.

"No."

"Did you tell Gerald to stop him from leaving?"

Silence.

"Did you know he damaged the car?"

Evelyn's eyes shifted.

That was enough.

Ryan leaned forward.

"He was taking me with him."

"Your father was destroying this family."

"He was leaving you."

"He was stealing you."

"I was his son."

"You were mine."

The words came out before Evelyn could stop them.

Ryan sat back.

There it was again.

Ownership.

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

"I did everything for you."

"You did everything to keep me."

"I protected you."

"You controlled me."

"I built your future."

"You destroyed my father's."

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"Your father was weak."

Ryan almost smiled.

It was the same word she used for everyone who resisted her.

Weak.

Emotional.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Evelyn never saw disagreement.

She saw betrayal.

Ryan placed another photograph on the table.

Oliver wearing his dinosaur pajamas.

"You almost did the same thing to my son."

Evelyn's expression softened.

"I love Oliver."

Ryan looked at her.

"No."

Her eyes hardened.

"Don't tell me what I feel."

"You love having him."

"That isn't the same as loving him."

Evelyn stared at her son.

Ryan stood.

"I spent my whole life trying to become strong enough for you."

He shook his head.

"Now I understand what strength actually looks like."

"It looks like Maya refusing to let you take her child."

"It looks like Oliver reaching for his mother while he couldn't breathe."

"It looks like telling the truth even when it destroys the family name."

Evelyn whispered:

"Ryan, if you walk out that door, you are choosing her over me."

Ryan stopped.

Then he gave the answer he should have given years earlier.

"No."

"I'm choosing my wife and my son over your control."

He opened the door.

Evelyn spoke one last time.

"You will lose everything."

Ryan turned.

"I already almost did."

Then he left.

Outside, Maya waited with Oliver.

Oliver ran toward him.

"Daddy."

Ryan lifted his son.

May you like

For the first time in his life, walking away from his mother did not feel like losing a family.

It felt like protecting one.
