Chapter 10 - The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

Dr. Martin Keene lived in a quiet suburb outside Chicago.
Police interviewed him that afternoon.
At first, he denied everything.
Then they showed him the invoices.
He changed his story.
He said Evelyn had provided medical records.
Then police showed him evidence that those records had been obtained without proper authorization.
His story changed again.
By evening, Keene had hired an attorney.
By midnight, he wanted a deal.
Ryan learned the details from Officer Ruiz.
Evelyn had approached Keene seven months earlier.
She told him Maya was deteriorating.
She offered him generous consulting fees to review family materials.
Keene never met Maya.
He never spoke with her doctor.
He relied entirely on videos, recordings, and written summaries supplied by Evelyn.
Those materials had been edited.
"Did he know?"
Maya asked.
Ruiz hesitated.
"He claims he didn't."
Ryan scoffed.
"Did he ask?"
Ruiz did not answer.
That answer was enough.
Keene's report was devastating.
It described Maya as obsessive.
Paranoid.
Emotionally volatile.
Potentially dangerous.
It described Evelyn as a stable protective presence.
Ryan as an overworked father unable to recognize his wife's decline.
And Oliver as a vulnerable child requiring immediate intervention.
Maya read only two pages before putting it down.
"I can't."
Ryan moved closer.
"You don't have to."
Maya looked at him.
"I need you to understand something."
"I'm trying."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Understand this."
"If Oliver hadn't had trouble breathing, if your meeting hadn't ended early, if I had screamed when they came for him, this report would have been presented as proof."
Ryan said nothing.
"They would have called me unstable."
"They would have taken my son."
"And everyone would have said it was for his safety."
Ryan looked at Oliver playing with a toy ambulance in the hospital bed.
The cruelty of the plan was not only what Evelyn intended to do.
It was how respectable she intended to make it look.
Later that day, hospital staff cleared Oliver to go home.
Maya refused to return to the Whitmore estate.
Ryan did not argue.
He rented a private apartment under a company name Evelyn could not access.
Only Maya, Ryan, Ruiz, and Maya's sister knew the location.
That first night, Oliver slept between his parents.
Around two in the morning, Ryan woke to hear Maya crying silently.
He did not touch her.
He simply stayed awake beside her.
At dawn, his phone vibrated.
Claire Donnelly had sent one message.
"I need to tell you what Evelyn was really planning."
Ryan stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
"But if she learns I contacted you, I am dead."
