Chapter 4 - The Second Angle

The second camera was hidden inside a decorative smoke detector.
Maya had never found it.
Neither had Ryan.
Officer Ruiz ordered a technical team to search the Whitmore house before sunrise.
They found four cameras.
One faced the nursery.
One faced the upstairs hallway.
One faced the kitchen.
The fourth faced the small sitting room where Maya often spoke privately with her sister.
None were connected to the home's official security system.
All four transmitted footage to an encrypted storage device.
The device was hidden inside Evelyn's guest suite.
Ryan stood outside the room while technicians removed it.
He had lived in that house for nine years.
His mother had stayed there frequently.
He had never once wondered why she insisted on maintaining her own bedroom.
Now every detail felt contaminated.
Maya remained at the hospital with Oliver.
Ryan returned there shortly after dawn.
He found her asleep in a chair beside their son's bed.
For a few seconds, he simply watched her.
He remembered how radiant she had looked when Oliver was born.
He remembered the emergency delivery.
The sleepless months afterward.
Maya's anxiety.
Her fear whenever Oliver became sick.
Evelyn had taken those vulnerable moments and turned them into a narrative.
And Ryan had allowed it.
Maya woke.
"You came back."
"They found more cameras."
She closed her eyes.
"How many?"
"Four."
Maya did not seem surprised.
That frightened him more than anger would have.
Ryan sat across from her.
"Why didn't you leave?"
Maya's expression changed.
"I tried."
"When?"
"Two months ago."
Ryan stared at her.
"You never told me."
"I packed Oliver's things."
"I called my sister."
"I was going to stay with her for a week."
"Your mother arrived before I could leave."
Ryan felt cold.
"What did she do?"
"She showed me documents."
Maya looked toward Oliver.
"She said if I took him out of the house without your permission, she would tell the court I had kidnapped him during a mental health crisis."
Ryan shook his head.
"She couldn't do that."
"She didn't need to win."
Maya looked at him.
"She only needed me to believe she could."
That sentence stayed with Ryan.
Evelyn had never relied only on power.
She relied on the fear of power.
Officer Ruiz arrived before noon.
He placed several printed photographs on the table.
One showed Evelyn speaking with a man outside a family-law office.
Another showed that same man entering the Whitmore estate.
Ryan recognized him.
"That's Harrison Vale."
Maya looked at him.
"Who is he?"
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"My family's attorney."
Ruiz nodded.
"And apparently, he's been helping your mother prepare the custody case."
Maya went pale.
Ryan picked up the photograph.
There were two people walking behind Evelyn and Vale.
One was a private investigator.
The other was someone Ryan knew even better.
His own executive assistant.
Claire Donnelly.
Ryan stared at the photograph.
He had trusted Claire for seven years.
May you like
Which meant Evelyn had not simply built a case against Maya.
She had built a network around Ryan without him ever noticing.
