Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT RYAN CAME HOME

Ryan Carter knew something was wrong before he opened the front door.

The porch light was flickering.

The security alarm was silent.

And from somewhere inside the house, he could hear his three-year-old son struggling to breathe.

“Noah?”

Ryan dropped his briefcase and rushed into the living room.

The sight in front of him stopped him cold.

Maya was on the floor beside the nursery doorway.

Blood ran from a cut above her eyebrow.

One hand pressed against the carpet.

The other reached toward their little boy.

Noah sat against the wall with his tiny chest rising and falling too quickly.

His lips had begun turning pale.

Beside him stood Ryan’s mother, Evelyn Carter.

She wore an immaculate cream designer suit.

Not a strand of silver-blonde hair was out of place.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

“Ryan,” Evelyn said carefully.

“Thank God you’re here.”

Ryan dropped to his knees beside Noah.

“Where’s his inhaler?”

Maya lifted her head.

“She took it.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“Your wife is unstable.”

Maya stared at her.

“You locked me out of the nursery.”

“I was protecting Noah from you.”

“You took his inhaler.”

“I removed it because you were trying to give him too much medication.”

Ryan looked from one woman to the other.

His son made a thin wheezing sound.

That sound ended the argument.

Ryan grabbed Noah and ran toward the front door.

“Maya, call an ambulance.”

“I already did.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Evelyn followed them into the hallway.

“You need to listen to me,” she said.

“Maya became violent.”

Ryan turned.

His mother pointed toward Maya’s bleeding face.

“She injured herself during one of her episodes.”

Maya’s mouth fell open.

“You shoved me into the dresser.”

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Ryan, look at her.”

“She is not thinking clearly.”

Maya tried to stand.

Her legs gave way.

Ryan caught her with one arm while holding Noah with the other.

For one terrible second, he felt his entire family collapsing against him.

Paramedics rushed through the front door.

One took Noah.

Another examined Maya.

A police officer entered behind them.

Then a second officer appeared from the nursery.

She was holding a small silver key.

“We found this taped beneath the changing table,” the officer said.

Evelyn’s face changed.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Ryan saw it.

The officer looked toward the locked walnut drawer beside Noah’s crib.

“What does this key open?”

Nobody answered.

The officer inserted it into the drawer.

The lock clicked.

And Evelyn took one silent step backward.
