Chapter 17 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE PLAN
Thomas said Evelyn had not paid for everything herself.
The private investigator.
The nurse.
The psychiatric facility.
The charter aircraft.
The hidden camera system.
The money came from an offshore account.
The account belonged to the Carter Family Preservation Trust.
Ryan had never heard of it.
His father created the trust before his death.
Evelyn controlled it afterward.
But another trustee had to approve large withdrawals.
That trustee was Richard Hale.
Ryan’s godfather.
Daniel Carter’s oldest friend.
Richard had comforted Ryan at the funeral.
He attended Ryan’s wedding.
He held Noah the day he was born.
When police questioned him, Richard denied everything.
Then the financial records arrived.
He had authorized every payment.
Ryan confronted him at the prosecutor’s office.
“Why?”
Richard looked older than Ryan remembered.
“Your mother said Maya was taking Noah away.”
“She lied.”
“I know that now.”
“You approved money for an abduction.”
“I believed it was a custody intervention.”
“You approved a hidden camera.”
“I signed what Evelyn placed in front of me.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“That is the excuse I used for years.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
Then he revealed something else.
Daniel had asked Richard to protect Ryan from Evelyn.
After Daniel died, Richard became afraid.
Evelyn threatened to expose financial crimes they had committed together.
So Richard obeyed her.
Year after year.
“Did she kill my father?” Ryan asked.
Richard did not answer immediately.
Then he said, “She ordered me to destroy the brake report.”
Ryan’s hands curled into fists.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You protected her.”
“I protected myself.”
Detective Ortiz entered with two officers.
Richard was arrested for conspiracy and evidence destruction.
The old car-crash case was reopened.
Evelyn’s current charges grew.
But when prosecutors searched the trust records, they discovered one last payment.
It had been issued two days after Evelyn’s arrest.
Someone still had access to the account.
Someone had transferred five hundred thousand dollars.
