Chapter 16 - THE LETTER TO MAYA
Maya did not want to open the letter.
Ryan did.
But it was not addressed to him.
They waited until Noah was asleep.
Then Maya broke the seal.
The first line was written in Evelyn’s elegant handwriting.
“You won.”
Maya almost stopped reading.
Ryan sat beside her.
She continued.
Evelyn described Maya as ordinary.
Unworthy.
Too emotional.
Too independent.
She claimed Maya had stolen Ryan by teaching him to distrust his own mother.
Then the letter shifted.
Evelyn admitted she had studied Maya’s childhood.
She knew Maya’s father had abandoned the family.
She knew Maya feared being judged as an inadequate parent.
She used those fears deliberately.
“I knew exactly which pressure would break you.”
Maya’s hands shook.
Ryan wanted to take the letter away.
She refused.
The final paragraph was different.
“If you are reading this, Ryan has finally chosen you over me.”
“Do not mistake that choice for strength.”
“He will doubt you again.”
“He has spent his entire life returning to me.”
“Men do not escape their mothers.”
“They only pretend.”
Maya folded the letter.
Ryan stared at the floor.
“She wanted this to survive her.”
“What?”
“The doubt.”
Maya looked at him.
“She wanted her voice to stay between us.”
Ryan nodded.
“And it will, unless I change.”
Maya’s expression remained guarded.
“You cannot apologize your way out of this.”
“I know.”
“You cannot promise me she is gone and expect everything to heal.”
“I know.”
“You have to learn why you kept believing her.”
Ryan looked toward Noah.
“I will.”
Maya studied him.
“Not for one week.”
“Not until the trial.”
“For the rest of our marriage.”
Ryan reached for her hand slowly.
This time, she allowed him to hold it.
But trust did not return like a light switching on.
It returned like Noah’s breathing.
One careful breath at a time.
The next morning, the prosecutor announced the charges.
Evelyn pleaded not guilty.
Then Thomas Vale offered a deal.
He would testify against her.

Someone he claimed had financed the entire plan.
