Chapter 14 - THE GRAVEYARD MEETING
Ryan went to the cemetery wearing a recording device beneath his coat.
Police surrounded the area from a distance.
He found Evelyn standing beside Daniel Carter’s grave.
She wore a black coat and dark glasses.
For the first time in Ryan’s life, she looked tired.
“You brought them,” she said.
“They’re not close enough to hear us.”
“You always were a poor liar.”
Ryan stopped six feet away.
“What happened to Dad?”
Evelyn touched the top of the headstone.
“Your father wanted to leave.”
“Leave the company?”
“Leave me.”
Ryan felt the cold wind move through the trees.
“Did you damage his brakes?”
Evelyn removed her glasses.
“He was going to take you.”
“Answer me.”
“He believed I was controlling.”
“You were.”
“He was weak.”
“Did you kill him?”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I protected what belonged to me.”
Ryan stared at her.
The confession was not direct.
But it was close.
Evelyn continued.
“Then Maya came along.”
“She smiled.”
“She acted innocent.”
“And slowly, you stopped needing me.”
“That is what children are supposed to do.”
“You were my life.”
“I was your son.”
“You were never supposed to become hers.”
Ryan looked at his father’s name carved into stone.
For years, he believed grief had made Evelyn protective.
Now he understood that possession had made her dangerous.
“Turn yourself in,” he said.
“And lose Noah?”
“You already lost him.”
Her eyes flashed.
“Maya will ruin him.”
“Maya saved his life.”
“She created chaos.”
“You took his inhaler.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You think this is over because you found papers?”
“You think evidence changes blood?”
“No.”
Ryan looked directly at her.
“But it changes what a jury believes.”
Sirens sounded beyond the cemetery gates.
Evelyn looked around.
“You betrayed me.”
“You endangered my son.”
Police moved between the headstones.
Evelyn reached into her coat.
Ryan froze.
She removed a small remote control.
“This controls more than one camera,” she said.
Then she pressed the button.
Ryan’s phone lit up with a live video.
