Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE CRIB

The camera had been hidden inside a false smoke detector.
Its lens faced the entire nursery.
Detective Ortiz brought in a forensic technician.
Within minutes, he found a wireless transmitter running through the wall.
The signal led to Evelyn’s private guest suite on the opposite side of the house.
Ryan followed the officers down the hallway.
His mother walked behind them.
She no longer looked calm.
She looked calculating.
The technician opened Evelyn’s desk drawer.
Inside was a monitor.
A pair of headphones.
Three external drives.
And a notebook filled with dates.
Ryan picked up the notebook.
“Put that down,” Evelyn said.
He opened it anyway.
Maya’s name appeared on nearly every page.
“Maya raised her voice at 8:42 p.m.”
“Maya cried after argument with Ryan.”
“Maya left medication on kitchen counter for eleven minutes.”
“Maya fell asleep beside Noah’s bed.”
Ordinary moments had been recorded as evidence.
Every mistake had been exaggerated.
Every emotion had been labeled instability.
Every act of exhaustion had been turned into neglect.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“How long have you been watching my wife?”
“I was watching my grandson.”
“You put a camera over his crib.”
“I needed proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That she was going to fail.”
The words left Evelyn’s mouth before she could stop them.
Ryan stared at her.
For the first time, he understood that she had never been waiting to discover the truth.
She had been waiting for Maya to break.
Detective Ortiz powered on the monitor.
The most recent video appeared.
Maya stood in the nursery holding Noah.
The boy was coughing.
She opened the medicine cabinet.
The inhaler was gone.
Maya searched the crib.
The dresser.
The bathroom.
Her panic grew.
Then Evelyn entered.
She stood near the doorway and watched.
Maya begged her to call Ryan.
Evelyn refused.
“You need to calm down,” Evelyn said in the recording.
“He can’t breathe,” Maya answered.
“You’re frightening him.”
“Where is his inhaler?”
“You probably lost it.”
The recording continued.
Maya tried to leave the nursery with Noah.
Evelyn blocked her.
Maya pushed past.
Evelyn grabbed her shoulder and shoved her into the dresser.
Maya’s forehead hit the corner.
Blood appeared instantly.
The technician paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
Ryan felt sick.
Then a voice came through Detective Ortiz’s radio.
“The child has been transported.”
“His condition is serious.”
Ryan ran for the door.

Behind him, Evelyn called his name.
He did not turn around.
