Chapter 18 - THE LAST PETITION
The new custody petition arrived while Maya and Noah were preparing to leave the hospital.
It was not filed by Evelyn.
It was filed by the Carter Family Preservation Trust.
The petition argued that both Ryan and Maya were unable to provide a stable home.
It cited the recent violence.
The police investigation.
Maya’s emotional distress.
Ryan’s failure to protect his child.
The trust requested temporary guardianship of Noah.
The proposed guardian was not Evelyn.
It was a private child-placement foundation.
Maya read the first page and felt the room close around her.
“They are still trying to take him.”
Ryan took the petition.
“This is not happening.”
“The hearing is tomorrow morning.”
Detective Ortiz contacted the prosecutor.
The foundation appeared legitimate.
It had operated for twenty years.
But its board included Richard Hale.
Thomas Vale.
And three Carter business partners.
Evelyn had built a legal structure that could continue acting without her.
Even from jail, her plan had momentum.
Ryan hired an independent attorney named Claire Donovan.
Claire reviewed the documents through the night.
“This petition depends on portraying chaos as parental failure,” she said.
“The strongest answer is the evidence showing the chaos was manufactured.”
Maya looked toward Noah.
“Will the court believe us?”
“The truth is not enough by itself.”
Claire placed the file box on the table.
“But the truth with evidence is powerful.”
At the hearing, the trust’s attorney described Maya as emotionally volatile.
He described Ryan as passive.
Then Claire played the nursery video.
The courtroom watched Evelyn hide the inhaler.
They watched her block Maya.
They watched Maya bleed while trying to reach her child.
Claire played the recording of Evelyn instructing the investigator to provoke Maya.
She presented the forged travel documents.
The sedative.
The hidden cameras.
The judge’s expression hardened with every exhibit.
Then Noah’s pediatrician testified.
“Maya’s panic was appropriate.”
“Her child was in respiratory distress.”
“The dangerous person was the individual who removed his medicine.”
The petition was dismissed.
The trust was suspended.
The judge granted Ryan and Maya a permanent protective order.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered.
Maya did not speak.
Ryan did.
“My wife was called unstable because she fought to save our son.”
