Chapter 11 - THE GUARDIAN

Evelyn’s custody petition named a secondary guardian.
Ryan had overlooked the line during the chaos.
If Evelyn became unable to care for Noah, guardianship would pass to Ryan’s older cousin, Thomas Vale.
Thomas was a family attorney.
He had handled Evelyn’s business affairs for years.
He had also prepared the emergency custody documents.
Ryan called him.
Thomas answered calmly.
“I’ve been expecting you.”
“Did you help my mother plan this?”
“I prepared documents based on information she provided.”
“She hid Noah’s inhaler.”
“I knew nothing about that.”
“She planned to take him out of the country.”
Silence.
Ryan tightened his grip on the phone.
“You knew.”
“I knew she was concerned.”
“You forged our signatures.”
“I did not personally sign anything.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Thomas exhaled.
“Ryan, your mother believes Maya is dangerous.”
“My son nearly died because of her.”
“Then perhaps this situation has become more complicated than intended.”
The phrase chilled Ryan.
“More complicated than intended?”
Thomas hung up.
Detective Ortiz traced his phone.
It was moving north toward the private airfield.
Police intercepted his vehicle.
Thomas was alone.
In the trunk, they found two suitcases.
One belonged to Evelyn.
The other contained children’s clothing in Noah’s size.
Thomas asked for an attorney.
But the evidence spoke before he did.
His laptop revealed drafts of every custody petition.
He had written the false psychiatric statement.
He had contacted the private facility.
He had prepared the forged travel letter.
The conspiracy had more than one architect.
Still, Evelyn remained missing.
Ryan returned to the hospital.
Noah was sleeping.
Maya sat beside him.
Ryan told her about Thomas.
She stared at the floor.
“Your family built an entire legal machine around taking my child.”
“Our child.”
Maya looked at him.
“Tonight, he was my child.”
“Because I was the one on the floor.”
“I was the one begging for his medicine.”
“I was the one your mother called unstable.”
Ryan accepted every word.
Then Noah woke.
His small voice was weak.
“Daddy?”
Ryan moved closer.
Noah looked toward the doorway.
“Grandma said Mommy would go away.”
Maya froze.
Ryan knelt beside the bed.
“When did she say that?”
May you like
Noah pointed toward the hidden camera the police had removed.
“When the red light came on.”
