Chapter 15 - THE PARKING GARAGE
Maya had gone downstairs to retrieve Noah’s favorite blanket from the car.
Two officers were supposed to accompany her.
One had been called away.
The other waited beside the elevator.
The security camera showed Maya crossing the garage alone.
A man in a hospital maintenance uniform followed twenty feet behind.
Ryan shouted into his phone.
“Maya, run.”
She turned.
The man accelerated.
Maya dropped the blanket and sprinted toward the elevator.
The doors began closing.
The man reached between them.
Maya struck his hand with her phone.
He forced the doors apart.
The officer nearby heard her scream.
He tackled the man before he could enter the elevator.
Police found zip ties in his pocket.
A syringe.
And a handwritten note directing him to leave Maya inside an abandoned vehicle.
Evelyn watched Ryan’s face.
“I told them not to hurt her.”
Ryan turned toward her.
“You sent him.”
“I needed time.”
“To do what?”
“To correct this.”
Police surrounded Evelyn.
She did not resist.
Detective Ortiz took the remote from her hand.
The man in the garage was identified as a former Carter employee.
Evelyn had paid him in cash.
His orders were to hold Maya until Evelyn could reach Noah.
It was the final piece.
Conspiracy.
Child endangerment.
Assault.
Attempted abduction.
Obstruction.
Evelyn was placed in handcuffs beside her husband’s grave.
She looked at Ryan.
“You are choosing her.”
Ryan’s voice remained steady.
“I am choosing my wife.”
“And my son.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You gave me fear and called it love.”
The officers led her away.
Ryan ran toward the cemetery gate.
He reached the hospital twenty minutes later.
Maya stood near the nurses’ station.
She was shaken but unharmed.
Ryan embraced her.
This time, she held him back.
Not because everything was forgiven.
Because both of them had nearly lost everything.
Detective Ortiz arrived later.
“Evelyn is in custody.”
Maya looked toward Noah’s room.
“Will she stay there?”
“The evidence is overwhelming.”
Ryan exhaled.
Then Ortiz handed him a sealed envelope recovered from Evelyn’s coat.
