Chapter 1 - THE BUTTON IN HER HAND

The dead do not hold on to things by accident.

That was the first thought that cut through Julián Armenta's grief when he opened his wife's clenched hand and found a torn navy-blue button pressed into her palm.

Behind him, his mother snapped, “Leave her alone.”

Julián did not move. Camila lay inside the coffin beneath soft candlelight, dressed in white as if someone had tried to turn murder into a peaceful portrait. Her skin was pale. Her hair was perfect. Her hand was not.

The button carried a strand of dark fabric and a tiny smear of dried blood.

Rodrigo, Julián's older brother, stood near the hallway wearing a navy jacket with one button missing.

Their eyes met.

Rodrigo lifted his whiskey. “You look like you've seen a ghost.”

Julián slipped the button into his pocket. “Maybe I have.”

His mother, Teresa, stepped between them. “Your wife died giving birth. Your son died with her. We are burying them tomorrow, and this family will not become the subject of gossip.”

“Where are the hospital papers?” Julián asked.

Teresa's face tightened. “You just came home. Grieve first.”

“I asked for the papers.”

Rodrigo laughed under his breath. “Still pretending you're in charge?”

Julián looked again at the scratch beneath his brother's jaw. Then he noticed something else: Camila's wedding ring was gone.

That night, while the house slept, Julián opened his father's hidden safe and found the emergency power of attorney Camila had signed months earlier. Beneath it was a sealed envelope in her handwriting.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, DO NOT TRUST TERESA OR RODRIGO.

His phone rang before he could open it.

Dr. Ana Lucía Méndez whispered, “Come to the hospital at six. Use the emergency entrance.”

“Is my son dead?”

May you like

The doctor went silent.

Then she said, “Julián, I don't know where your baby is.”
