Chapter 2 - THE EMPTY BIRTH RECORD

At dawn, Julián entered the hospital through a service corridor that smelled of bleach and burnt coffee. Ana Lucía waited inside a locked records room, still wearing yesterday's clothes.
She did not hug him. She simply handed him a folder.
Inside was a blank birth certificate.
“No name. No time of birth. No attending physician,” Julián said.
“Because Camila never delivered here,” Ana replied. “She arrived unconscious after midnight. No ambulance record. No identification band. Your mother brought her in through a private entrance with two men.”
“And the baby?”
Ana slid a security photograph across the table. It showed Teresa leaving the maternity wing carrying a covered infant seat.
Julián's knees nearly gave out.
“You said she was unconscious.”
“She was alive for eleven minutes,” Ana said. “Long enough to wake up once.”
“What did she say?”
Ana's eyes filled. “She said, ‘Rodrigo took him.’ Then she grabbed my sleeve and told me to protect the blue ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“I don't know. But someone searched my office an hour later.”
The lights went out.
A lock clicked in the hallway.
Ana grabbed Julián's arm. “That door locks only from the outside.”
Smoke began curling under it.
Julián ripped a metal shelf from the wall and smashed the narrow window. Alarms screamed. They climbed into the corridor as flames swallowed the records room behind them.
Outside, a black SUV sped away.
On the pavement, Julián found a matchbook stamped with the gold crest of the Armenta vineyard.
His family was no longer hiding the truth.
They were destroying it.
