Chapter 15 - WHAT REMAINED

Camila's grandfather had secretly financed the vineyard during its worst years. Teresa forged the repayment records and buried the ownership agreement after his death.
With the original contract restored, Camila became the majority owner.
She did not sell.
Instead, she and Julián turned the estate into a legitimate business and used the old guesthouse as a recovery center for families reunited through the investigation. The underground tunnels were sealed after every piece of evidence was removed.
Months later, on a warm afternoon, Julián stood beneath the vineyard trees holding Mateo while Camila supervised workers planting new vines.
Their son laughed when sunlight moved through the leaves.
Camila walked over and touched the faint scar on Julián's hand where Rodrigo's knife had cut him.
“Do you ever think about the funeral?” she asked.
“Every day.”
“So do I.”
He looked at her. “What kept you fighting?”
Camila smiled softly. “I knew you would notice the button.”
The torn navy button sat inside a small glass box in their office—not as a symbol of Rodrigo, but as proof that one desperate act could break open an entire empire of lies.
Teresa died in prison two years later after helping authorities identify dozens of victims. Julián attended no ceremony, but he allowed her confession to remain public.
Rodrigo never apologized.
That no longer mattered.
One evening, Julián carried Mateo through the quiet house. Camila stood by the window, alive, tired, and real.
The home no longer smelled of wax and dying flowers.
It smelled of dinner, baby soap, and rain drifting in from the hills.
Julián placed his arm around his wife.
“They tried to bury the truth,” he said.
Camila rested her head against him. “They forgot truth knows how to breathe.”

Outside, the first new vines rose from the soil.
And this time, nothing was hidden beneath them.
