Chapter 9 - CAMILA WAS ALIVE

The crying came from a hidden speaker.

A trap.

Gas hissed from the vent.

Julián covered his mouth, smashed the window, and climbed onto the fire escape. Below, a woman in a nurse's coat hurried across the parking lot carrying an infant carrier.

He ran down three flights and caught her beside a van.

She turned.

Julián froze.

It was Camila.

Alive.

Pale, bruised, and barely standing—but alive.

She whispered his name before collapsing into his arms.

The carrier was empty.

At a safe house, Camila explained that Rodrigo had strangled her after she confronted him. Teresa injected her with a drug that slowed her pulse, then bribed an undertaker to prepare a closed-casket burial. Camila woke inside a transport van and escaped with Marisol's help.

“Why didn't you call me?” Julián asked, torn between relief and pain.

“They had Mateo,” she said. “They sent me videos. Every time I tried to reach you, they moved him.”

Mateo. Their son's name.

Camila showed him a thin blue ledger page sewn inside her coat. It recorded payments to police officers, judges, and a private adoption network.

“Rodrigo isn't selling the vineyard,” she said. “He's using its shipping trucks to move babies across the border.”

Julián felt sick.

Then Camila grabbed his hand. “There is one more thing. Teresa didn't order my murder.”

“Who did?”

Before she answered, the safe house alarm sounded.

On the security screen, Teresa stood outside alone, holding Mateo.
