Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN AT THE BUS STATION

The storage key led Julián to a locker at the old bus terminal outside town. Inside sat a blue accounting ledger, a burner phone, and a photograph of Camila beside a young nurse named Marisol Vega.

The burner phone contained one saved number.

Julián called it.

A woman answered, breathing fast. “Camila?”

“No. This is Julián.”

She nearly hung up.

“Please,” he said. “I need to know where my son is.”

Marisol agreed to meet behind an abandoned chapel. She arrived wearing a hood and carrying a diaper bag.

“The baby was alive,” she said. “A boy. Camila delivered at the vineyard clinic before they brought her to the hospital. Rodrigo ordered me to sign a false death report.”

“Where did they take him?”

“Teresa gave him to a couple across the border. But Rodrigo changed the plan.”

A car engine roared nearby.

Marisol shoved the diaper bag into Julián's arms. “There's proof inside.”

A black sedan burst around the corner.

Julián dragged her behind a stone wall as the car struck the chapel gate. Two men got out.

He fought one off with a broken wooden rail while Marisol ran toward the road. The second man raised a gun.

A shot cracked.

Marisol dropped.

Julián reached her as the attackers fled.

She was conscious, barely.

“Rodrigo kept the baby,” she whispered. “Not to raise him. To trade him.”

“For what?”

Her fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“For your signature.”

Then the diaper bag began to ring.

A phone was hidden beneath the blanket.
