Chapter 1 - The Door Opened at the Worst Possible Moment

Daniel Mercer knew something was wrong before he was fully through the front door.

His suitcase was still in his right hand when he heard Elena make a sound he had never heard from her before.

It was not a scream.

It was a weak, breathless gasp.

He dropped the suitcase.

“Elena?”

Then he saw the living room.

A lamp had been knocked onto the rug.

One dining chair lay on its side.

The hallway camera hung from its cable near the ceiling.

And Vanessa was kneeling over Elena.

Daniel froze for less than a second.

Then he moved.

“Get away from her!”

Vanessa spun around.

Her face changed immediately.

The rage disappeared.

In its place came panic.

“Daniel, wait.”

He shoved the fallen chair aside and dropped beside his wife.

Elena was curled protectively around her stomach.

Her face was pale.

Her fingers closed around Daniel’s sleeve.

“The babies.”

That was all she managed to say.

Daniel pulled out his phone and called 911.

Vanessa backed toward the hallway.

“She attacked me first.”

Daniel looked at his sister.

“What?”

“She went crazy.”

Vanessa pointed at Elena.

“She threatened me.”

Elena stared at her in disbelief.

Daniel’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“Don’t say another word.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the broken security camera.

She seemed almost relieved when she saw it dangling uselessly from the wall.

Daniel noticed.

He would remember that expression later.

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

Police came behind them.

The house filled with radios, medical bags, questions, and footsteps.

Daniel rode in the ambulance with Elena.

Vanessa remained behind with the officers.

During the ride, one of the paramedics warned Daniel that Elena appeared to be in premature labor.

Eight months.

Twins.

Two babies who were supposed to have several more weeks.

Daniel held Elena’s hand as the ambulance moved through traffic.

“I’m here.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“She wanted the code.”

“What code?”

“The trust.”

Daniel felt cold.

Their attorney had established a $150,000 legacy trust for the twins.

Elena had received a temporary six-digit authorization code that morning because she was listed as co-trustee.

Only Daniel, Elena, their attorney, and the bank’s automated security system should have known that code existed.

Daniel stared at his wife.

“How did Vanessa know?”

Elena’s eyes closed.

“I don’t know.”

At Crestview Medical Center, Elena was rushed upstairs.

Daniel was stopped outside the operating area.

A doctor spoke quickly.

Both babies were alive.

But the medical team was preparing for an emergency delivery.

Daniel signed forms without feeling his own hand move.

Then his phone rang.

It was Officer Reed from Crestview Police.

“Mr. Mercer, we need to clarify something.”

Daniel walked toward the windows.

“What?”

“Your sister claims your wife initiated the confrontation.”

Daniel nearly laughed.

Then he realized the officer was serious.

“She says Elena tried to strike her.”

“My wife is eight months pregnant.”

“I understand.”

“She was alone in our house.”

“We’re documenting statements from everyone.”

Daniel looked down at the parking lot nine floors below.

Then he remembered the camera.

“She destroyed our hallway camera.”

“We found it.”

“She crushed it.”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

For the first time, fear pushed through his anger.

Without footage, Vanessa could lie.

She had lied her entire life when it benefited her.

Then Daniel remembered something.

Six months earlier, after a neighborhood burglary, he had upgraded the entire security system.

The cameras no longer stored recordings locally.

The fiber connection uploaded footage continuously to an encrypted cloud server.

Daniel opened the security application on his phone.

His password failed.

He tried again.

The account opened.

There were seventeen new motion recordings.

His hands began shaking.

The final clip was forty-three minutes long.

Daniel pressed play.

He watched Vanessa enter the house.

He heard her demand the code.

He watched Elena refuse.

Then he saw exactly what his sister had done.

Daniel had to turn away after several seconds.

But the recording continued.

And just before the attack, Vanessa’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her words were faint but clear.

“Tell Alan I’ll have the code before the audit team arrives.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Alan Pierce was not a stranger.

Alan Pierce was the chief financial officer of Mercer Freight & Logistics.

And Daniel had trusted him for eleven years.
