Chapter 11 - The Auditor Who Already Knew

Thomas Greer had audited Mercer Freight for four years.
He knew the company’s weaknesses.
He knew which contracts received federal review.
He knew which financial records auditors would request first.
And according to the parking footage, he had secretly met Vanessa, Alan, and Martin three weeks before the investigation became public.
Federal agents detained Greer Thursday night.
At first, he denied everything.
Then investigators showed him the footage.
His story changed.
He claimed Martin invited him to discuss “audit preparedness.”
Then Hale showed him bank records.
Greer had received $310,000 through a consulting company owned by his brother-in-law.
His attorney asked for privacy.
Two hours later, Greer began cooperating.
He described the plan.
Alan created fake vendors.
Vanessa managed payment approvals and shell companies.
Martin protected them from the board.
Greer manipulated audit samples so the fraudulent invoices would not be selected.
The theft had continued quietly.
Until someone inside the federal agency noticed unusual freight pricing.
That triggered the accelerated review.
Panic followed.
Alan wanted to disappear.
Martin wanted Daniel framed.
Vanessa wanted control.
Greer wanted immunity.
Daniel listened to Hale summarize the confession.
“How was I supposed to take the blame?”
“Your credentials.”
“I know.”
“Fake messages.”
“I know.”
“And a package scheduled to be delivered to investigators tomorrow morning.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What package?”
Hale placed a photograph on the table.
A sealed evidence envelope had been recovered from Greer’s hotel.
Inside were printed bank statements.
Fabricated emails.
Copies of contracts.
Every document pointed toward Daniel.
There was even a spreadsheet titled D.M. PRIVATE DISTRIBUTIONS.
Elena shook her head.
“They built an entire case.”
“Yes.”
“Would it have worked?”
Hale looked at Daniel.
“For a while.”
That answer was enough.
Daniel imagined federal agents arriving at his office.
News cameras outside headquarters.
Board members distancing themselves.
Banks freezing accounts.
Clients terminating contracts.
By the time he proved innocence, Mercer Freight might have been gone.
Then Hale gave him one final piece of Greer’s confession.
“According to Greer, Vanessa was supposed to obtain your wife’s access code.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because the trust portal linked to your family estate structure.”
“We figured that out.”
“There’s more.”
Hale looked toward Elena.
“She planned to use the code to download proxy documents.”
Elena felt cold.
“And then?”
“Greer says she intended to alter them.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Alter what?”
“Control rights.”
The scheme was larger than theft.
Vanessa wanted documents showing that, in the event Daniel was arrested or incapacitated, his voting authority would transfer to Elena.
Vanessa intended to replace Elena’s name.
With her own.
Elena whispered.
“That wouldn’t survive legal review.”
“No.”
Hale nodded.
“But it might survive long enough for an emergency board vote.”
Daniel finally understood the timeline.
Tuesday.
Get Elena’s code.
Wednesday.
Alter the documents.
Friday.
Frame Daniel during the audit.
Then seize temporary control before anyone could untangle the fraud.
A corporate coup built on forged paperwork and family betrayal.
Hale closed the file.
“Greer says the plan changed Tuesday afternoon.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“After Vanessa attacked Elena?”
“Yes.”
“What changed?”
“Martin ordered everyone to destroy evidence.”
Daniel looked at the broken hallway camera image on his phone.
Vanessa had tried.
May you like
She had simply destroyed the wrong thing.
