Chapter 12 - Elena Stops Being a Victim

For days, everyone had asked Elena how she felt.

Nobody asked what she remembered.

On Friday morning, she decided that had to change.

She requested Detective Reed.

She requested Agent Hale.

And she requested a full recording of her statement.

Daniel sat beside her.

Elena began with Vanessa’s arrival.

The demand for the authorization code.

The argument.

The attack.

Then she described details she had not mentioned before.

“Vanessa had a folder.”

Hale looked up.

“What kind?”

“Gray.”

“Did you see inside?”

“Only briefly.”

“What did you see?”

“A photograph.”

“Of what?”

“My car.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?”

Elena continued.

“It was a photo of my SUV.”

“Where was it taken?”

“I don’t know.”

She closed her eyes.

“Maybe a parking garage.”

Hale asked another question.

“Anything else?”

“A maintenance receipt.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

Elena’s SUV had been serviced two weeks earlier.

At a shop recommended by Vanessa.

Hale immediately contacted the shop.

The owner remembered the vehicle.

More importantly, he remembered the man who brought it in after closing hours.

Alan Pierce.

Daniel stood.

“Elena drove that car afterward.”

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“Almost every day.”

Federal technicians impounded the SUV.

The examination took six hours.

They discovered deliberate damage to a brake sensor connector.

Not enough to guarantee immediate failure.

Enough to cause intermittent braking problems under specific conditions.

Daniel had to leave the room when Hale told him.

Vanessa had not begun considering violence on Tuesday.

The plan had started earlier.

The attack inside the house had been desperation.

The car had been preparation.

Elena remained calmer than Daniel expected.

“She thought the babies and I might die in an accident.”

Hale did not soften the truth.

“That is one possibility.”

Daniel paced near the window.

“She drove with Elena.”

Hale frowned.

“What?”

“Vanessa rode in that SUV three days after the service.”

Elena looked at him.

“She did.”

Daniel remembered dinner.

Vanessa had refused to let Elena take the highway.

“She said traffic was terrible.”

Elena’s face changed.

“She insisted we use neighborhood roads.”

Hale wrote it down.

Vanessa had known.

That mattered.

By evening, the federal audit officially began.

Not at Mercer Freight headquarters.

Inside a secured government facility.

Investigators seized control of the relevant financial records.

Martin was suspended from the board.

Alan remained in federal custody.

Greer signed a cooperation agreement.

Vanessa’s charges expanded.

Her attorney stopped making public statements.

Then Daniel received unexpected news.

Owen no longer needed assisted oxygen.

Sophie followed twelve hours later.

Elena stood between their incubators.

For the first time since Tuesday, she smiled.

Daniel wrapped an arm around her.

“We’re getting them home.”

“Yes.”

Then Elena looked at him.

“And we’re getting our life back.”

Daniel expected fear.

Instead, he saw resolve.

Vanessa had wanted Elena powerless.

May you like

She had achieved the opposite.
