Chapter 10 - The Midpoint They Never Planned For

The server header changed everything.

The forged email had passed through an internal relay located in Archive Room C.

Not Daniel’s executive laptop.

Not his phone.

Not any device he controlled.

Agent Hale now had technical evidence that someone had manufactured communications in Daniel’s name.

By Thursday afternoon, federal prosecutors stopped referring to Daniel as a possible subject.

They began treating him as a target of the scheme.

But his relief lasted less than an hour.

Martin Caldwell’s attorney requested an emergency board vote.

The motion claimed Daniel’s personal circumstances made him temporarily unable to perform his duties.

Daniel read the filing from Elena’s hospital room.

“They’re still trying to remove me.”

Rachel nodded.

“Martin says the investigation is destabilizing the company.”

“He helped create the investigation.”

“We have suspicions.”

“We have his burner phone.”

“We have messages.”

“Then arrest him.”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“They’re building a larger case.”

Daniel hated the answer.

Elena understood it.

“If they move too early, Martin blames Alan.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And Alan blames Vanessa.”

“Exactly.”

The conspiracy survived because everyone could point at someone else.

Daniel needed something connecting all three.

The answer came from an unexpected place.

The destroyed hallway camera.

A technician enhanced the audio.

Vanessa’s call before the attack was longer than Daniel had first heard.

Her words were clear.

“Tell Alan I’ll have the code before the audit team arrives.”

Then a pause.

“No, Martin doesn’t need to know how.”

Another pause.

“After Friday, Daniel won’t be in a position to ask questions.”

Daniel listened twice.

Elena listened once.

“That connects her to both.”

“It connects her to them by name.”

Hale agreed.

But he wanted more.

“Conversation is strong.”

“Not enough?”

“We need financial coordination.”

Daniel turned toward Elena.

She was staring at the paused video.

“What?”

Elena pointed.

“Her bracelet.”

Daniel frowned.

Vanessa wore a wide silver bracelet.

“So?”

“I gave her that.”

Daniel waited.

“It wasn’t really a bracelet.”

Elena sat straighter.

“It was a fitness tracker with payment capability.”

Daniel understood.

“You think she used it?”

“She never carried a wallet when she wore it.”

Rachel contacted the payment provider under subpoena.

The records arrived that evening.

Vanessa’s tracker had made purchases near three suspicious locations.

A Nevada mailbox.

Continental Freight’s regional office.

And the private airfield where Alan was found with Martin.

One transaction stood out.

A payment at 11:48 p.m. three weeks earlier.

Private conference suite.

Three attendees.

The facility kept visitor logs.

Vanessa Mercer.

Alan Pierce.

Martin Caldwell.

All three had met secretly.

The same night, $1.4 million left Mercer Freight through two fraudulent vendors.

Hale finally smiled.

“Now we have coordination.”

But the biggest shock came later.

The conference facility also kept parking camera footage.

A fourth person had attended.

Daniel watched the grainy image appear.

His mother stood beside him.

Patricia covered her mouth.

“No.”

Daniel zoomed in.

The fourth person was not family.

It was Thomas Greer.

Mercer Freight’s outside federal compliance auditor.
