Chapter 15 - The Lowest Point

Monday morning brought the worst financial news yet.

A national retailer suspended its Mercer Freight contract.

The agreement represented nearly fourteen percent of annual revenue.

Rumors spread that Daniel had secretly negotiated immunity.

Employees protested outside headquarters.

Some believed him.

Some did not.

Anonymous accounts posted forged emails online.

The conspiracy had prepared for public scandal too.

Daniel watched a television commentator display one of the fake documents.

“There is no confirmation that Daniel Mercer authored this message.”

But the damage was already happening.

Truth moved slower than accusation.

Then Sophie’s monitor alarmed.

Daniel dropped the phone.

Nurses entered immediately.

Elena stood.

“What happened?”

A doctor asked them to step back.

Sophie had experienced an episode of apnea.

Brief.

Treatable.

But terrifying.

For seventeen seconds, Daniel forgot the company.

He forgot Vanessa.

He forgot the audit.

There was only his daughter.

Sophie stabilized.

The doctor explained that premature babies sometimes had breathing pauses.

They would continue monitoring her.

Elena sat beside the incubator after everyone left.

Daniel crouched beside her.

“I can’t do both.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“Fight this company war and be here.”

“Then don’t fight alone.”

“I built Mercer.”

“And eight hundred people helped you.”

Daniel said nothing.

Elena continued.

“Use them.”

That afternoon, Daniel held a company-wide video meeting.

He did not defend himself emotionally.

He did not attack Vanessa.

He showed facts.

The forged email headers.

The hidden Archive Room C system.

The federal recovery of stolen funds.

The suspension of Martin Caldwell.

The cooperation of Thomas Greer.

Then he said something no lawyer had written.

“I trusted people I should have questioned.”

Employees listened.

“That failure is mine.”

He paused.

“The fraud is not.”

The recording spread online within hours.

Public sentiment did not transform overnight.

But the bleeding slowed.

One client resumed limited shipments.

The bank restored partial credit.

Payroll cleared.

That evening, Daniel returned to the NICU.

Elena was asleep in a chair.

He placed a blanket over her.

Then Rachel called.

“We found the video statement.”

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“Where?”

“Martin didn’t destroy it.”

“Why not?”

“Because it was insurance.”

“Against Vanessa?”

“Against everyone.”

Daniel’s father appeared on the recovered file.

Older.

Tired.

Speaking directly to the camera.

Rachel had watched only the first minute.

“What did he say?”

She was silent.

“Rachel?”

“He said Vanessa wasn’t acting alone the first time either.”

Daniel felt cold.

“The scholarship theft?”

“Yes.”

“Who helped her?”

Rachel answered.

May you like

“Martin Caldwell.”
