Chapter 4 - The Man Who Never Missed a Meeting

Alan Pierce was famous inside Mercer Freight for punctuality.

For eleven years, he had never missed a board meeting.

He had attended one by video while hospitalized with pneumonia.

He had joined another from an airport lounge during a blizzard.

Yet on Wednesday morning, with the company facing the most serious investigation in its history, Alan vanished.

Daniel joined the emergency board meeting from a private hospital conference room.

Seven directors appeared on the screen.

Every face looked tense.

Board chair Martin Caldwell spoke first.

“Daniel, federal agents contacted us.”

“I know.”

“They’re examining payments made under your credentials.”

“I know.”

Martin removed his glasses.

“You understand why we need answers.”

Daniel’s anger rose.

“My wife was attacked yesterday.”

The room went quiet.

“My sister attacked her because she believed Elena had financial access she needed.”

Nobody interrupted him.

“Vanessa referenced Alan Pierce on video.”

One board member leaned forward.

“Video?”

Daniel told them about the cloud recording.

He did not describe the attack.

He did not need to.

Martin’s voice softened.

“How is Elena?”

“Recovering.”

“And the babies?”

“In intensive care.”

There was an uncomfortable pause.

Then the corporate reality returned.

Martin folded his hands.

“We’re temporarily restricting executive authorization privileges.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Mine?”

“Everyone’s.”

“Good.”

Several directors looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

“Freeze vendor payments.”

“Our operations could stop.”

“Then let them slow down.”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If someone is stealing from this company, I’m not giving them another dollar.”

By afternoon, investigators entered Mercer Freight headquarters.

They sealed Alan’s office.

They copied servers.

They removed two desktop computers.

One discovery happened almost immediately.

Alan’s desk drawers were empty.

Not organized.

Empty.

Personal photographs gone.

Awards removed.

Even the emergency suit he kept behind the door had disappeared.

Someone had planned his exit.

Back at the hospital, Elena was finally wheeled to the NICU.

Daniel pushed her chair beside the incubators.

Owen slept beneath a knitted cap.

Sophie’s tiny hand rested near her cheek.

Elena pressed her fingers against the glass.

For several minutes, neither parent spoke.

Then Elena said something Daniel did not expect.

“Vanessa asked me a question before she demanded the code.”

“What question?”

“She asked whether you had signed the Continental Freight renewal.”

Daniel frowned.

“That contract was renewed two months ago.”

“I told her I didn’t know.”

“Why would she ask?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel opened his phone.

Continental Freight was one of Mercer’s largest subcontractors.

He searched his email.

The renewal agreement appeared.

He opened the attachment.

Everything looked normal.

Then he noticed the signature page.

His electronic signature was there.

But Daniel remembered signing that renewal while visiting the Denver distribution center.

The document metadata listed the signing location as Crestview headquarters.

Daniel’s face went still.

Elena noticed.

“What?”

He enlarged the authentication details.

The renewal had been approved from Terminal F-17.

Alan’s computer.

Daniel called Agent Hale.

“I found another document.”

“What kind?”

“A contract.”

“With whom?”

“Continental Freight.”

There was silence.

Then Hale said something that changed the direction of the entire investigation.

“Mr. Mercer, Continental Freight is already under federal investigation.”
