Chapter 5 - The Company Behind the Company

Continental Freight had worked with Mercer Logistics for six years.

Its trucks carried medical equipment across the Midwest.

Its invoices were large but rarely unusual.

That was why Daniel had never questioned them.

Agent Hale did.

By Wednesday evening, federal investigators had traced twelve suspicious payments through Continental Freight.

The money did not stay there.

It moved.

First into a regional holding company.

Then into a consulting group.

Then into accounts connected to Northbridge Routing, Halcyon Fleet Services, and Silver Track Consulting.

The three vendors Daniel claimed he had never approved.

Rachel Kim spread printed documents across the hospital conference table.

“This is layering.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Explain.”

“They’re moving money through legitimate businesses before sending it to companies they control.”

Elena sat beside Daniel in a wheelchair.

“And Vanessa?”

Rachel tapped one page.

“Silver Track Consulting was incorporated using a registered agent in Nevada.”

“So?”

“The beneficial ownership filing was amended eight months ago.”

Rachel slid the paper toward them.

The owner was listed as Victoria Lane.

Daniel shook his head.

“Never heard of her.”

Elena did not speak.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

She looked at the page again.

“Vanessa used that name in college.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

“She told me once.”

Elena’s voice was quiet.

“She said when she didn’t want someone to find her online, she used her middle name and her grandmother’s last name.”

Vanessa’s middle name was Victoria.

Their grandmother’s maiden name had been Lane.

Daniel called Hale.

Within an hour, investigators confirmed that Silver Track’s mailing address was a private mailbox Vanessa had rented.

The first direct link had been established.

But the larger question remained.

Why frame Daniel?

The answer arrived shortly before midnight.

Hale returned to the hospital holding an evidence bag.

Inside was a small black USB drive.

“We recovered this from your sister’s vehicle.”

Daniel stared at it.

“What’s on it?”

“Draft financial reports.”

Hale opened his tablet.

“The reports show you approving irregular payments.”

“I didn’t.”

“We know several signatures were copied.”

“Several?”

“Twenty-nine so far.”

Daniel sat back.

Hale continued.

“There are also emails.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What emails?”

“Messages made to look like conversations between you and vendor representatives.”

Elena whispered.

“She manufactured a trail.”

“Yes.”

Hale looked at Daniel.

“If these files had been provided to auditors before we understood the manipulation, you would have been the obvious suspect.”

Daniel felt sick.

“How long has this been happening?”

“The earliest file is dated fourteen months ago.”

Fourteen months.

Vanessa had attended Christmas dinner.

Birthday parties.

The twins’ gender reveal.

She had smiled in photographs.

She had brought Elena flowers.

And the entire time, she had apparently been building a financial case designed to destroy her brother.

Hale placed another photograph on the table.

It showed a handwritten schedule recovered from Vanessa’s car.

MONDAY - DANIEL OVERSEAS.

TUESDAY - E.

WEDNESDAY - FILES.

FRIDAY - AUDIT.

Elena stared at the second line.

TUESDAY - E.

Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“What was supposed to happen Tuesday?”

Hale did not answer immediately.

“We’re trying to determine that.”

Daniel already knew.

Tuesday had been the day Vanessa came to Crestview Lane.

And beside Elena’s initial was one word written in red ink.

May you like

RESOLVE.
