Chapter 18 - The False Victory

For twenty-four hours, it looked like everything was over.
Alan Pierce accepted a plea agreement.
Martin Caldwell accepted one too.
Thomas Greer agreed to testify.
The stolen funds were frozen.
Daniel’s board restored his full authority.
Mercer Freight’s suspended client returned.
News outlets began reporting Daniel as the victim of an elaborate fraud conspiracy.
Then Vanessa’s attorney held a press conference.
“My client was manipulated by her brother.”
Daniel watched from Elena’s hospital room.
“He controlled the company.”
The attorney continued.
“He controlled the accounts.”
Elena muted the television.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“Stop giving them your attention.”
“She’s accusing me of ordering the fraud.”
“And evidence says otherwise.”
“She’ll testify.”
“Good.”
Daniel frowned.
Elena leaned back.
“She has lied in every direction.”
“That doesn’t make her harmless.”
“No.”
Elena looked toward the twins.
“It makes her predictable.”
Vanessa’s new claim was simple.
Daniel had supposedly ordered the fake vendors.
He had supposedly told Alan to route money.
He had supposedly instructed Vanessa to create shell companies.
Then, when the audit moved forward, he allegedly tried to silence her.
The security footage became the center of her new defense.
Vanessa claimed Elena had demanded Vanessa accept blame.
The video contradicted her.
But her attorneys argued Daniel could have edited it.
That argument lasted less than one day.
The cloud provider produced cryptographic verification records.
The footage had been uploaded automatically.
The timestamps were immutable.
No edits had occurred.
Then investigators uncovered another recording.
Not from the house.
From Vanessa’s own phone.
During forensic recovery, technicians restored a deleted voice memo.
It had been accidentally activated inside Vanessa’s purse four days before the attack.
Martin’s voice was audible.
“If Daniel gets charged Friday, the board acts by noon.”
Alan answered.
“Elena’s proxy is the problem.”
Then Vanessa spoke.
“She won’t be a problem.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
Elena looked at him.
He could not continue.
Hale did.
The rest of the audio described the vehicle sabotage.
Vanessa did not merely know about it.
She approved it.
Martin asked whether she was certain.
Vanessa answered with five words.
“The twins change the timeline.”
The room went silent.
Elena stared at the wall.
Daniel reached for her hand.
For months, Vanessa had been calculating around the birth of two children.
Not loving them.
Not anticipating becoming an aunt.
Calculating them.
The voice memo destroyed her new defense.
But Rachel warned Daniel not to celebrate.
“Conviction still requires a trial.”
“How long?”
“Months.”
Daniel looked at Owen and Sophie.
He wanted this finished now.
It would not be.
Real consequences moved slowly.
Paperwork.
Hearings.
Depositions.
Experts.
Motions.
Testimony.
Daniel finally accepted something he had resisted since Tuesday.
There would be no single dramatic moment when everything became normal.
They would have to build normal again while the case continued.
One day at a time.
Then the NICU doctor entered smiling.
“I have news.”
Elena stood.
The doctor looked at both parents.
“If they continue progressing like this, Owen and Sophie may go home next week.”
May you like
For the first time in days, Daniel forgot Vanessa’s name.
