Chapter 10: The Courtroom
The custody hearing began Monday morning.
Reporters crowded the courthouse steps.
Evelyn arrived in white, holding a photograph of Oliver as though she were already mourning him.
Maya entered through a side door with Ryan.
Inside the courtroom, Judge Caldwell refused to admit the full nursery recording until an independent expert verified it.
He allowed Evelyn’s attorneys to submit Maya’s altered medical records.
He allowed Dr. Vale’s unsigned confession claiming he acted alone.
He even allowed photographs suggesting Maya had secretly met with Vale.
Ryan’s attorney objected repeatedly.
Most objections were overruled.
Evelyn took the witness stand.
She described Maya as loving but emotionally fragile.
She cried when discussing Oliver’s illness.
She said she removed the inhaler because Maya was administering it incorrectly.
She claimed Maya attacked her before collapsing in panic.
Every sentence sounded reasonable.
Every lie had been polished.
Then Maya testified.
She spoke quietly.
She admitted she had suffered anxiety after Oliver’s birth.
She admitted she had feared she was not a good mother.
“But fear did not make me dangerous,” she said. “It made me careful.”
She described Evelyn holding the inhaler.
She described Oliver gasping.
She described the threat to take her child.
Evelyn’s attorney approached.
“Mrs. Whitmore, have you ever imagined harming yourself?”
Ryan’s attorney objected.
Caldwell allowed the question.
Maya’s face tightened.
“During a period of severe exhaustion, I told my doctor that I was afraid of failing my family.”
“That was not my question.”
Maya looked toward Oliver’s empty seat.
He remained at the hospital.
“No,” she said. “I never planned to harm myself or anyone else.”
The attorney lifted a medical report.
“Dr. Vale recorded a different statement.”
“He altered it.”
“Because your mother-in-law forced him?”
“Yes.”
“Yet Dr. Vale is currently missing from police custody.”
The courtroom erupted.
Ortiz stood suddenly.
She had not known.
Vale had disappeared during a transfer that morning.
Judge Caldwell called for order.
Then Evelyn’s attorney presented a new piece of evidence.
A recent video showed Maya entering Vale’s office two nights before the nursery incident.
Maya stared at the screen.
“That is not me.”
The woman wore Maya’s coat.
She had Maya’s hair.
From a distance, she looked identical.
Ryan leaned toward Ortiz.
“Find Grace.”
Ortiz understood immediately.
Grace had access to the original records.
She also resembled Maya from behind.
But when Ortiz called the safe house, no one answered.
Minutes later, a court officer delivered an envelope to Ryan.
Inside was a photograph of Grace tied to a chair.
