Ryan requested a recess.
In a private consultation room, he showed the photograph to Ortiz.
She examined the background.
A rusted radiator.
Green walls.
A stained-glass window.
Ryan recognized the window.
It belonged to the chapel at the abandoned Whitmore textile mill.
The same property where his grandfather had founded the family company.
Ortiz organized a rescue operation.
Ryan received a call before she could leave.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“You have always been stubborn.”
“Where is Grace?”
“Safe, for the moment.”
“You are finished.”
“No, Ryan. I am offering you one final chance to save what matters.”
Evelyn demanded that Ryan withdraw the nursery footage and support temporary custody for Caroline.
In exchange, Grace would live.
Maya would avoid criminal charges.
Ryan would remain chief executive.
“You planned all of this because you wanted my company?” he asked.
“Our company,” Evelyn corrected. “Your father nearly destroyed everything.”
“You killed him.”
A long silence followed.
Then Evelyn laughed softly.
“Samuel Vale has filled your head with stories.”
“He changed Dad’s medication for you.”
“Your father was weak. He intended to divide the company and give control to people who had not earned it.”
Ryan understood.
She was not denying it.
He activated the recorder on Ortiz’s phone.
“Did you know the dosage would kill him?”
Evelyn’s tone changed.
“You should be careful with accusations.”
“Answer me.”
“I knew your father’s heart could not survive another betrayal.”
That was enough.
Ortiz signaled for officers to move.
At the mill, Grace was found inside the chapel.
She was alive but injured.
Two armed security guards were arrested.
Evelyn was not there.
She had directed everything remotely.
When Ryan returned to court, he discovered that Judge Caldwell had already ruled.
Temporary custody of Oliver had been transferred to Caroline.
Officers were on their way to the hospital.
Maya ran from the courtroom.
Ryan followed.
They arrived just as a social worker entered Oliver’s room.
Oliver began crying when strangers approached his bed.
Maya held him tightly.
“You cannot take him,” she said.
The social worker showed her the order.
Then Detective Ortiz entered with federal agents.
She carried the recording of Evelyn’s confession.
“The order is suspended,” Ortiz announced. “Judge Caldwell is under investigation for bribery.”
The social worker stepped back.
Ryan looked through the hospital window.
Across the street, a black sedan pulled away from the curb.
