Chapter 2: A Forged Name

Chapter 2: A Forged Name
At St. Matthew’s Hospital, doctors rushed Oliver into the pediatric emergency unit.
Ryan stood outside the treatment room with rainwater dripping from his coat.
He could hear machines beeping behind the doors.
Every sound felt like an accusation.
Maya sat nearby with a bandage beneath her nose.
Her hands would not stop shaking.
Ryan knelt in front of her.
“Tell me everything.”
Maya looked toward the officers standing at the end of the hallway.
“Your mother arrived this morning and said you had asked her to help.”
“I didn’t.”
“I know that now.”
Maya explained that Evelyn had brought soup, medicine, and several legal documents.
She claimed the papers would authorize a private nurse to care for Oliver.
When Maya tried to read them carefully, Evelyn became impatient.
The documents were not nursing forms.
They were statements declaring that Maya suffered from violent episodes and could not safely care for her son.
“When I refused to sign, she took Oliver’s inhaler,” Maya said. “She told me I had ten minutes to reconsider.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“I tried to get it back. She shoved me into the dresser. I grabbed her arm. Then she knocked over the lamp and started screaming that I was attacking her.”
“And the camera?”
“She pointed at the closet and smiled.”
Maya wiped her eyes.
“She said the right angle could make anyone look guilty.”
A detective named Lena Ortiz approached them.
She placed the temporary custody order on the table.
“Mr. Whitmore, is this your signature?”
Ryan studied it.
It was nearly perfect.
The shape of the R.
The long stroke beneath his last name.
Even the pressure marks appeared familiar.
But one detail was wrong.
Ryan always lifted his pen before the final letter.
The forged signature did not.
“No,” he said. “I did not sign this.”
Detective Ortiz nodded.
“We will have it examined.”
A doctor stepped into the hallway.
“Oliver is stable.”
Maya covered her mouth.
Ryan nearly collapsed with relief.
The doctor explained that Oliver had suffered a severe asthma episode worsened by fever and stress.
He would recover, but another delay could have been catastrophic.
Ryan closed his eyes.
His mother had known that.
Evelyn knew Oliver’s medical history better than almost anyone.
She had still taken the inhaler.
Detective Ortiz lowered her voice.
“There’s another problem.”
She showed Ryan a photograph found in Evelyn’s folder.
It depicted Maya standing in a hospital parking lot beside a man in a dark coat.
On the back, someone had written:
MAYA MEETS DR. VALE IN SECRET.
Maya stared at it.
“I have never seen that man in my life.”
Ortiz turned the photograph over again.
“The image was taken six months ago.”
Ryan looked more closely.
Behind Maya was a silver car.
His mother’s car.

Someone had not merely followed Maya.
Someone had been building this case for months.
